SAS/C Compiler Software

Computer Associates relies on SAS/C®to develop several products

Computer Associates International, delivers end-to-end infrastructure that enables e-business through innovative technology, services and client education.

CA offers a complete array of e-business solutions, available across a broad range of computing platforms, which allow companies to deploy the mission-critical systems required for success in today's marketplace. Built upon leading and emerging Internet and wireless standards, CA solutions span the spectrum of technology -- from the World Wide Web to large back-office systems.

CA utilizes the SAS/C Compiler in various products, including:

  • CA-Spool
  • Unicenter TNG® FrameworkTM for OS/390 Release 2.2
  • CA-SYSVIEW/E® 7.3 OS/390
  • CA-XCOMTM Release 3.0
  • CA-LPD 1.0 (to be released soon)
  • Solve:EPS

Niels-Worsoe Andersen, development manager at CA, says CA had several reasons for choosing the SAS/C Compiler product to aid in the development of CA-Spool:

  • "In the early '90s, when we started to add TCP/IP printer support to our mainframe-based VTAM print server product CA-Spool, we chose to use the SAS/C Compiler mainly because of the included SAS/C Socket Library. The Socket Library allowed the same TCP/IP applications to be used with both IBM's TCP/IP stack and CA's Network/IT TCPaccess' TCP/IP stack without changing a comma.

  • "Since then, we have mostly implemented new features in C, utilizing the high-level C implementations of MVS low-level functions. This has helped improve our productivity and shorten the development cycle. (e.g., Implementing a dynamic library allocation in assembler typically took a couple of days. Now in C, it might take 20 minutes).

  • "For the high-volume, multisession-type applications we are developing, we highly depend of the reliability and low overhead of the MVS Multitasking support offered by SAS/C in the OS/390 environment. The few times we have hit a problem with the SAS/C Compiler environment, we have most often been able to help ourselves by finding the necessary information on the SAS/C home page. Online access to all of the SAS/C documentation from the Internet is a great help."

To ensure that its products reflect the most advanced technology, CA partners with virtually every leading hardware and software supplier, including Cisco, Compaq, Dell, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems.

In support of the Application Service Provider (ASP) infrastructure marketplace, CA recently formed iCan-ASP Inc., a subsidiary that offers new and innovative technologies for providing applications through the Internet, wireless and broadband communications. CA also launched InterBiz, a division that helps financial, banking and supply chain clients to capitalize on e-business opportunities through Web-enabled integrated and extended applications.

Established in 1976, CA has annual revenues exceeding $6 billion and licenses its products through a direct sales organization, distributors, value-added resellers and system integrators. CA is headquartered in Islandia, New York, and has operations in more than 100 countries.
