SAS Donation to Benefit Trinity Access Programmes4,000 students from 39 schools benefit annually from technology educationDublin, Ireland, 11. Dec. 2006 - SAS, the leader in business intelligence software and services, today announced a donation of €70,000 and a range of software to Trinity College's Trinity Access Programmes (TAP). TAP is a series of innovative activities designed to address education disadvantage and targets students who might not have previously considered participating in third level education. It provides practical supports to encourage and enable talented students from areas with little history of progression to enter third level education. It specifically assists students in second level schools to become more comfortable and capable with technology which in turn assists them consider and take up further education. TAP is currently linked to 39 primary and secondary schools in areas of concentrated urban disadvantage in Dublin, involving 4,000 students each year. TAP has assisted over 170 students to graduate from Trinity College with honours degrees since 2000 and a further 250 are expected to graduate by 2010. There are 429 students currently in undergraduate and postgraduate study in the College and many more have progressed from TAP linked schools to other higher education institutions. Due to the post-entry support structure provided by TAP, the retention rate through college averages at 89%, some 5% higher than the national average. Speaking at the announcement of the donation at the Cruthú Project, in Trinity College Dublin, Tom Kitt, the Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach and Government Chief Whip said, "The support given by SAS to the TAP programme is a clear acknowledgement by SAS of the valuable contribution that Irish graduates have made and continue to make to the ICT sector in Ireland. It is also, I think, an act of commitment to Ireland that will result in more opportunities for our young people, especially those from disadvantaged areas. Through their support, SAS are giving new opportunities for self-realisation and greater participation in the economic, political and cultural life of Ireland."Michael Kearney, Country Manager, SAS Ireland said, "SAS has extensive involvement in research and development and is committed to investing in education. Our philanthropic mission comes from a belief that we, as corporate citizens, have an opportunity to positively impact the educational process. But this is more than a mission - education is our passion. We look forward to the positive impact our partnership with TAP will make." The donation will be support two initiatives in the TAP Second Level Programme:
FOR FURTHER INFORMATION: About TAP The Trinity Access Programmes (TAP) are a central part of Trinity's plan to encourage students with ability and potential from under-represented backgrounds to participate in higher education and to realise their potential. Established in 1993, the overall mission of TAP is to increase the confidence and capacity of communities where there had been little tradition of third level education. Since its inception, TAP has pioneered a selection of initiatives, such as Student Shadowing Days, year-long third level preparatory courses for young adults and the Primary Schools 'Take the Lead' Programme, which have been adapted and replicated across the higher education sector in Ireland. Nationwide, TAP has the most robust pre-entry developmental programmes in its link schools, it has a continuum of programme activities from primary school pupils through to mature learners, it has a reflexive post-entry support programme that is developed each year in response to stakeholder evaluations and it has the highest national profile of any third level access programme in the country. TAP also has the highest student retention figures nationally. TAP receives some state funding but also endeavours to source 50% of the cost of each TAP initiative elsewhere.
