Turning student data into growth: How analytics transforms the classroom
SAS helps educators make better decisions

Individualized instruction
and improved student outcomes
Lubbock High School achieved this using SAS® EVAAS
Lubbock High School, one of five high schools in Lubbock Independent School District (Lubbock ISD), has redefined its focus on student achievement. With a long history that predates the Town of Lubbock itself, the historic West Texas institution has evolved with the community and now serves nearly 2,000 students through an array of rigorous academic programs, including International Baccalaureate and AP Capstone diplomas.
When Dr Lyndsey Lucas joined the school three years ago, she saw an opportunity to leverage analytics not just as a compliance tool, but as a strategic driver of instructional excellence.
“We’ve always emphasized achievement,” says Dr. Lucas, Lubbock High’s academic dean. “But growth tells us the deeper story – how students are improving year after year. SAS EVAAS has helped us bring that into focus.”
Now, teachers at Lubbock High School use SAS EVAAS, giving them more insight into each student’s progress across the years and empowering them to tailor instruction and target interventions and enrichment opportunities.
EVAAS isn’t just a data dashboard; it’s a conversation starter, a relationship builder and a roadmap for growth. It’s helped us connect the dots between data and the human side of learning. Dr. Lyndsay Lucas Academic Dean Lubbock High School
What you need to know
- Lubbock High’s mission is to ensure every student, regardless of background or program, reaches their highest potential through personalized learning and teacher support.
- The school wanted to move beyond a single-year view of test results and begin tracking longitudinal growth to better understand student progress.
- Although EVAAS (Education Visualization and Analytics Solution) was available district-wide, most educators viewed it as a data warehouse rather than a practical classroom decision-making tool.
- Dr. Lucas wanted to integrate EVAAS data into teacher coaching, Professional Learning Community (PLC) discussions, and Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) performance measures to improve student learning and instructional impact.
- The leadership team aimed to shift from “data compliance” to a culture of growth and reflection, where every teacher could use analytics to enhance student outcomes.
How SAS helped
- EVAAS provided predictive analytics and growth reports that helped identify how much progress students were making, regardless of where they started.
- The student projection reports empowered teachers to have growth-centered conversations with students, helping them visualize their potential and set academic goals.
- Administrators used EVAAS data to pinpoint students who needed early intervention, enabling timely, targeted support rather than reactive remediation.
- Math, science and English teams incorporated EVAAS results into data conferences, aligning classroom practices with growth projections.
- The automated analytics saved the school’s leadership valuable time, eliminating manual data aggregation and offering reliable, actionable insights at the click of a button.
- “I didn’t have to crunch numbers or spend hours analyzing spreadsheets,” notes Dr. Lucas. “The data was already there, and it’s accurate, reliable and ready to use.”
What happened next
- Teachers now use EVAAS projections to individualize instruction, build growth plans and celebrate student progress.
- Students are more motivated and confident when teachers show them their potential. “It tells them they’re seen, valued and capable,” says Dr. Lucas.
- By sharing EVAAS insights, teachers strengthen collaboration across subject teams, foster a culture of continuous improvement and share accountability.
- The leadership team plans to expand its use of EVAAS diagnostics to help teachers reach different student groups and replicate success across departments.
- Ultimately, Lubbock High School achieved an A rating from the Texas Education Agency, recognizing a milestone several years in the making and becoming the first comprehensive A-rated campus in Lubbock ISD.
