The state of Iowa turns student data into academic progress

Data helps every student succeed.

Educators spot gaps, target support and track progress over time
Iowa Department of Education achieved this using • SAS® EVAAS for K-12
Across Iowa, educators are being asked to look beyond test scores and understand how students are progressing over time. Even with mountains of assessment data, knowing where to focus to help every student can be overwhelming.
In five districts – Pleasant Valley, Denison, Center Point-Urbana, Bettendorf and Dallas Center-Grimes – SAS EVAAS for K-12 is helping teachers and leaders turn data into clear steps – highlighting where students are thriving, where they are struggling and how the choices educators make today can shape tomorrow’s learning.
Spotlight on the districts
Each school district has its own unique community and culture, but their challenges all share a familiar theme.
- Pleasant Valley and Bettendorf wanted to understand why some students soared while others struggled, especially English-language learners and those in special education.
- Denison and Center Point-Urbana serve diverse or rural populations, balancing support for students who need extra help with opportunities for high achievers.
- Dallas Center-Grimes realized that proficiency alone wasn’t enough – some capable students weren’t progressing as expected.
Across all five districts, leaders discovered that traditional reports couldn’t answer the questions that mattered most. “We were really looking at something that would give us information about student growth in a usable way. And, finally, here it was,” says Melissa Hocking, Director of School Improvement and Special Services at Center Point-Urbana.

Using data in the classroom
With SAS EVAAS, schools are weaving data into daily practice. By consolidating assessment data into one intuitive platform, districts replace scattered spreadsheets with useful visualizations. Student projection reports flag at-risk learners early, giving educators the opportunity to deliver targeted interventions, while growth and value-added reports reveal hidden potential among high achievers.
Statewide comparisons and scatterplots help districts benchmark performance and spark productive conversations. “For the first time, I felt like I could quickly make actionable and articulate conclusions about what’s going on within this data,” explains Austin Roy, Assistant Principal at Dallas Center-Grimes High School.
Planning and improving instruction
Now districts are turning insight into action. Leaders use the data to refine instruction, track progress and evaluate programs. Resources are allocated strategically to support all learners and ensure overlooked groups get the attention they need to excel. Denison is streamlining access to growth data for families, Center Point-Urbana is targeting interventions to students who need them most, Pleasant Valley is helping students transition smoothly into high school, and Dallas Center-Grimes is monitoring progress and ensuring instructional practice is aligned with state standards.
Districts can now proactively design learning experiences that support every student, whether they need extra help or an added challenge.
Supporting every student
These five Iowa school districts show what’s possible when educational expertise meets thoughtful analytics. With EVAAS, educators can see what’s working, adjust where needed and make decisions that help every student succeed. More than reporting results, the software helps districts design the kind of learning that ensures every child has the chance to reach their full potential.
