The countdown to the General Data Protection Regulation has begun. Every organisation that processes EU consumer data has to comply by May 25, 2018. Those who don’t will face fines of up to €20m or 4% of their global annual turnover.
GDPR is the most important change in data privacy regulation in 20 years. It strengthens the fundamental rights individuals have over their data and requires organisations to pay more attention to data protection than before.
Organisations need to start planning for GDPR now, they will need to demonstrate they comply with the regulation and have the relevant new processes in place.
The new rules of GDPR mean organisations:
- That don't comply will incur fines up to €20m or 4% of their global annual turnover.
- Have to have explicit valid consent for all data collected. Data controllers must be able to prove consent which, may be withdrawn at any time.
- Must provide customers the right to be forgotten.
- Must provide customers the right to transfer their data to another service provider.
- Must provide customers the right to know when their data has been hacked.
- Need to ensure privacy policies are explained in clear and understandable language.
- Must appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO) if they have 250+ employees.
