Hands on Workshop: Dr Taylan Akay will lead the case study: Understanding education-related inequalities and mortality using a synthetic dataset mimicking the Person Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA).
By actively engaging with SAS Studio during this workshop, participants will develop the ability to:
- Navigate complex longitudinal datasets
- Apply appropriate statistical methods and
- Critically assess implications to inform public policy decisions related to socio-economic issues.

Meet the Experts
Dr Luke Hendrickson
Luke is the Branch Manager of the Data Integration Services Branch at the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Luke has been working for the Australian Government in program, policy, and data roles since 2011. Luke’s background is as a research scientist and has a PhD from Australian National University. Luke is currently the Program Manager of Data Integration Services at the Australian Bureau of Statistics. He leads a team of excellent governance and data engineering experts to deliver the ABS data integration program and consistently improve the ABS’ client experience. This includes delivering the world-leading Person-Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA) and the Business Longitudinal Analytical Data Environment (BLADE) now used by hundreds of organisations and thousands of clients. Luke was one of the architects of BLADE at its inception and also of the inaugural Australian Management Capability Survey, both enduring data assets for researchers around the world.
Dr Taylan Akay, PhD
Taylan Akay, PhD, currently works at the Department of Defence as a data specialist. He also works at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) as a postdoctoral senior research associate, advancing AI ethics for autonomous weapon systems.
Dr Akay’s career spans rigorous analytic roles across the Department of Defence, Social Services, and Home Affairs, where he has crafted scalable machine learning models, driven cloud migration strategies, and implemented enterprise data governance frameworks.
Based in Canberra, he earned a PhD in economics at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University and a master’s in applied finance at Monash University.
