About this paper
The epidemic of prescription opioid abuse puts children at serious risk. Nationally, between 60 and 80 percent of child abuse and neglect cases involve a parent or guardian abusing substances. When child welfare agencies can integrate their records with data from state-run Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs), they can identify and prioritize at-risk cases and make better and more proactive decisions to protect children. The data sources are already there; they’re just not being used – yet.
