Programs require that students select any one of the following hands-on components:
- Lab with hands-on skill development where SAS is the primary tool (50%).
- Practicum, thesis or capstone that uses SAS (may also fulfill course credits).
- Course project that uses SAS.
- Internship that uses SAS.
- Paper, presentation or poster accepted at a regional, national or international conference or analytics competition (e.g., SAS Curiosity Cup or a SAS users group).
- Innovative learning approach proposed by the program and approved at the discretion of SAS.

Students should have a clear understanding of the value of SAS certification and are encouraged to access SAS Skill Builder for Students.
At least one graded assignment with applied SAS usage per course.
Students are encouraged to attempt any SAS certification exam.
At least six credit hours of required courses that use SAS in each course at least 50% of the time, measured by the number of weeks.
