SAS advocates sustainability and social innovation as best business practices
From the start, analytics leader SAS has prioritized corporate citizenship as a critical factor when making business decisions. And with more than four decades of growth, it’s been the right path. For SAS, corporate social responsibility (CSR) not only focuses on building a sustainable workplace but also strives to make the world better through social innovation that connects analytics and advocacy. From giving back through education and protecting the planet to improving the lives of its employees and people around the world, SAS is committed to helping solve environmental, social and economic issues.

Contributing to the greater good
Not only does SAS participate in employee volunteer and giving activities, as well as local workplace, community and global events such as #GivingTuesday, the company helps make a difference in the world by using its analytics to benefit humanity. For example, in 2017, the company launched GatherIQ™ – a crowdsourcing initiative that brings together volunteers to solve social challenges. This mobile app connects nonprofits, partners and SAS to support important causes and solve pressing problems through data and analytics.
SAS also continues to ramp up its efforts in Data for Good projects where information and analytics tackle humanitarian needs, such as opioid addiction, safeguarding vulnerable children and protecting endangered species.
Education continues to be a philanthropic focus for SAS. It supports global education initiatives that promote learning and literacy for all, as well as fostering STEM skills and building diversity in the workforce pipeline. For P-12, SAS offers free digital tools, resources and apps through Curriculum Pathways®, which is used by more than 3.5 million teachers and learners around the world. For higher education and adult learners, downloads and registrations of SAS University Edition and SAS OnDemand for Academics grew 37 percent in 2017 to approximately 1.4 million, and more than 230,000 people registered for free e-learning courses in statistics and programming.
Environmental performance on areas such as energy, emissions, water and waste can be easily viewed on the 2017 SAS corporate responsibility site. A few of SAS’ top 2017 achievements include:
- Expanded use of “smart campus” technologies: At headquarters in Cary, NC, SAS installed additional sensors in office buildings and continued to access data from building management systems. The application of SAS advanced, real-time analytics is helping to improve energy efficiencies while proactively monitoring equipment performance to boost operational longevity. Energy use intensity for office buildings decreased 3.1 percent to 15.4 kWh per square foot, building on a five-year total decrease of 15.4 percent.
- Minimized energy consumption and emissions: Energy consumption decreased by 7.7 percent, and related emissions were reduced by 4.5 percent despite an increase in office space and staff. SAS also increased the number of free workplace charging stations for plug-in electric vehicles.
- Increased solar capacity: Grew solar farm 140kW and generated 3.5 million kWh of clean, renewably sourced energy from rooftop and ground-mounted solar systems.
- Diverted waste from landfills: SAS diverted 56.1 percent of operational and construction waste from landfills globally.
- Continued best building practices: In addition to achieving LEED® Gold certification for SAS’ largest office building and data center at its world headquarters, now all SAS HQ office buildings and data centers built in the last 25 years are LEED certified.
In 2017, SAS earned many accolades for its good corporate citizenship including being recognized on Fortune magazine’s list of companies that “Change the World”. SAS Korea also won an award from the Social Responsibility Management Quality Institute for its investment in education and fair operation efforts. In addition, SAS Hong Kong has continued to achieve the “Caring Company Logo” by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service since 2015.
