Global North Carolina Heat Map Shows What's Global in Every County
SAS® Application Provides Demographic, Education and Economic Data for All 100 Counties
The Center for International Understanding (CIU) today unveiled the Global North Carolina Heat Map, a new tool providing snapshots of what's global in each of the state's 100 counties. For the first time, county-specific global demographic, education and economic is data is presented in one place through an application built with SAS software.
"We are so pleased to be able to partner with the Center for International Understanding on this important project," said SAS' Ann Goodnight, who is also a member of the CIU Board of Advisors. "North Carolina moves forward when we all understand the importance of global engagement in preparing future leaders and creating jobs."
SAS hosted today's event that drew more than 100 invited business, policy and education leaders. CIU Executive Director Adam Hartzell was joined by University of North Carolina President Tom Ross and Southern Growth Policies Board Executive Director Ted Abernathy to demonstrate the Heat Map.
CIU undertook the Heat Map project in response to calls from policy and business leaders for specific, local information showing international connections.
The first-of-its-kind statewide global Heat Map reflects 53 international data points for each county. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau, North Carolina state agencies, state education networks, and import/export databases are included in this unique tool. The county-by-county breakdown reveals facts that may be surprising:
- Foreign-owned companies provide 4,600 jobs in Iredell County
- Hertford County's foreign-born population increased 149%
- between 2000 - 2010
- Rockingham County exports totaled $1.5 billion in 2011
- Craven County has 19 International Sister Cities
Potential uses of the data include local economic development conversations and district-level explorations of foreign language offerings. Moving forward, CIU will periodically update the data.
Generous sponsorship from the following Global Ambassadors supports CIU's policy work: SAS, Quintiles, Local Government Federal Credit Union, and the Moise and Vera Khayrallah Fund of the Triangle Community Foundation.
The Center for International Understanding promotes awareness, expands understanding and empowers action through global education. Its programs for business, policy and education leaders aim to make North Carolina the most globally engaged state in the nation. Founded in 1979, CIU is part of the University of North Carolina system.
