Amesto Nextbridge

Topic of the Challenge:

(M)apping the Brazilian food system

Across the tropics, three-quarters of all deforestation is driven by agriculture, mainly for livestock, as vegetation is cleared to establish new pastures and crops for feed production. Despite the importance of forests for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), deforestation remains challenging to eliminate, not least because agricultural supply chains are opaque, so that consumers do not know where their food comes from, how it is made, and what the impacts of its production are. Our team will tackle this data gap in Brazil, a mega-biodiverse, rapidly urbanizing, middle-income country with a booming livestock sector.

The team will build a consumer-facing app which will allow users to scan ID-codes on meat products in Brazilian supermarkets, returning a dashboard of information about the origin of the product and its impacts. By putting information about food into people’s pockets, we will increase supply chain transparency and lead to more informed food choices.
