Topic of the Challenge:
Violent crime is a very real problem across the UK, and it’s a problem that can destroy lives and communities. In 2019, it was reported that there had been a 19% rise in violent crime in a year. Specifically, there has been an 80% increase in knife crime offences since 2014.
Due to this overriding problem across the UK, as a team we are passionate about the Sustainability Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). Specifically, the targets under this goal; 16.1 reducing all forms of violent crime and 16.7 responsive decision making.
Our aim is to utilise relevant analytics techniques and data sources to advise UK police forces and national institutions on how they can continue to prevent and reduce crime across the UK in a more effective manner.
One technique would be to use forecast modelling using collated data to predict crime trends and geographical hotspots. We will utilise police crime data, independent crime data and social media data to produce a predictive and trend analytics model.
Our model is intended to derive valuable insights and trends from the appropriate data relating to specific areas across the UK to inform decision-making at all levels.
