AES creates transparency about work-related injuries with SAS® Visual Analytics

Arbejdsmarkedets Erhvervssikring (AES - Labour Market Insurance) is the Danish institution in charge of making impartial and correct decisions about claims under the Worker’s Compensation Act. AES handles about 60,000 claims of work-place related injuries and illnesses, determining whether the claimant is eligible for compensation.

In 2017, AES became part of the ATP (Labour Market Supplementary Pension) and with this change came a new level of expectation in terms of efficiency and access to data. At that time, it became clear that AES’ tools used for strategic and daily decision support were not efficient.

Data reports took too long to produce, and the result were not always easy to understand. Another goal for AES was to ensure as smooth a process as possible throughout the case management process, to achieve shortest time to decision and high customer experience.

AES reached out to SAS and decided to try SAS® Visual Analytics in order to improve in this area.

A clear overview of cases in process

AES uses SAS® Visual Analytics to inform its management the status of work-in-progress, including processing times for claims, employee productivity, numbers of claims approved and denied, and much more. This reporting is also used in the day-to-day work to allow for better planning and more focused and optimised casework at all levels of AES.

Now, AES’ data scientists are able to make not only reports that are requested, at a fast pace, but also able to support the business decisions on a day-to-day basis. The aim is to make business users more independent through individual log-ins to Visual Analytics. This allows them to see how many cases of a specific type are in the system, for example. It also allows managers to plan efficient use of available working hours, for example to make a push to clear out the oldest claims fast and bring down processing times.

Ultimately, the new tools are helping managers steer processes to ensure efficiency and high quality. It is easier for them to manage the entire organisation towards the goals of AES, and to make road maps for reaching them.

When new demands arise, reports can be designed to help the organisation manage their KPIs. Managers often come to the data analysts for advice on how to get better insight, allowing for a good discussion on how reporting tools are working and what is possible to do with analytics.

Public data about work-related injuries and illnesses

Greater transparency and a solid foundation for near-real time decision-making has paved the way for new projects for the data analysts at AES.
Now, the data management team is working to achieve the next goal: Supplying real-time information about the status of work-related injuries and illnesses to the public, not least journalists, who often contact AES for information.
