SAS #3 Best Employer in Belgium
Working environment, recognition and trust most valued by employees
For the seventh year in a row SAS is among the top three Best Employers in Belgium. The company was named #3 in the category of fewer than 500 employees. Last week, the company also earned the Top Employer 2014 certificate.
“Best Employer Belgium” is an annual survey of workers organized by the Vlerick Management School in collaboration with the Great Place to Work® Institute Europe. SAS owes its success to continuous efforts to offer employees a great workplace. The Castle de Robiano, SAS Belgium’s headquarters in Tervuren, is not just beautiful. It houses a company that pays close attention to work-life balance, mobile working, and training and education. SAS offers employees the opportunity to share their knowledge, talents and expertise with each other, not only in Belgium but across borders. In this way, employees can grow at a horizontal level, which is an interesting alternative given the small Belgian hierarchical structure.
A veteran and a newcomer about working at SAS
SAS Belgium, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, has evolved from a small operation into a solid SME. Since the early years, the company has always maintained a strategic HR policy that spotlights individual needs. Two employees; a veteran and a “newbie,” (the 30th and 154th employees, respectively), say it best:
Roel Van Assche, Principal Consultant, celebrated 20 years at SAS last week. "Twenty years ago, we got free coffee and cookies, as much as we wanted,” he remembers. “Today there is also fresh fruit and soup. Small details, of course, but it always made me feel spoiled, Parental leave and flexible working are, for example, no problem,” he continues. “Those things become more important when your family life evolves. But the main point is that SAS offers many opportunities to make something of your job. As consultants, for example, we each have our strong points, be it technical, business or mathematical. At SAS, you have the chance to specialize in it. Moreover, you get the recognition and approval to transfer your knowledge to customers and colleagues, even abroad. As a veteran, I would like to remain relevant in the future. Technology is my life, and even after twenty years, I keep challenging myself. That simply matches with a company like SAS."
Jos Polfliet, Consultant, started at SAS in August 2013. "As a young graduate, I had heard that SAS scores well as “best employer.” But it was SAS' reputation in analytics that convinced me to apply. I am a mathematician, and I was looking for a job where I could combine analytics and consulting. But it was only by actually working here that I experienced the unexpected advantages. Especially important is the pleasant atmosphere and the flexibility – very relevant when you have to drive from Gent to Tervuren and back – and the accessibility of people. For example, I received a lot of training the first months and I constantly asked questions. Now, I give trainings too, and people come to me with their questions. All this gives a sense of trust, mutual respect and appreciation. A nice detail is that newbies can organize an evening for all colleagues, baking waffles for instance. Twice a year, this is the ideal opportunity to get to know each other better in a fun, friendly atmosphere.
