Preparing students with statistics and analysis for the global future
Institut Pertanian Bogor students enter workforce with hiring edge
To ensure its graduates enter the job market equipped with the skills that top employers demand, the Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) uses SAS® to teach statistics and analytics.
"Our mission is to produce high-quality graduates who understand the importance of quality and productivity in a global, competitive environment," says Dr. Ir. Hari Wijayanto, Head of the Statistics Department at IPB. "SAS technology goes hand in hand with our mission."
"As one of the country's leading institutions of higher education, our key advantage is that we reliably produce graduates empowered with the analytical skills required in modern business," Hari says. "And our graduates have an explicit advantage when employers require SAS skills."
IPB uses SAS software because it allows students to learn more than statistics. With SAS, students can learn about sophisticated data mining, forecasting and optimization methods.
... our key advantage is that we reliably produce graduates empowered with the analytical skills required in modern business.
"In our teaching, learning and research process, we need extensive statistical capabilities to analyze large data sets from disparate sources," Hari says. "SAS meets that goal. Statistical procedures in SAS are constantly being updated and enable us to go beyond the basics for more advanced statistical analyses."
Statistics students use SAS/STAT®, Base SAS, SAS/GRAPH®, SAS/QC®, SAS/OR® and SAS/IML® in their courses. The software is installed on 100 computers for teaching and learning. Students learn about data management, experiment design, statistical methods, statistical computation and simulation methods.
Students analyze data with a broad range of statistical methods, including analysis of variance, mixed models, regression, categorical data analysis, Bayesian analysis, multivariate analysis, survival analysis, psychometric analysis, cluster analysis, nonparametric analysis, survey data analysis, post fitting inference, multiple imputation for missing values and study planning.
In the future, lecturers will become more involved in the SAS Academic Program by enrolling in SAS training and research projects. Currently, about half of the department's lecturers are mastering SAS; the goal is to integrate it throughout the department.
About IPB's Statistics Department
The Statistics Department of IPB provides two levels of degrees: bachelor of statistics and a post-graduate program (master's and doctorate degrees in statistics and applied statistics). The department aspires to be a leading center of higher education for statistics in Indonesia. Meanwhile, its current mission is to produce reliable statistics graduates who have an awareness on the importance of quality and productivity to global competition.
IPB is one of the leading universities in Indonesia and its Statistics Department is committed to developing statistics science in the country by collecting, managing and reporting the data with quantitative analyses that drive interesting conclusions.
