Helping students qualify for in-demand business analytics jobs – in an otherwise COVID-19 impacted employment market

Free and assisted online learning enabling students to qualify for globally recognised SAS® Certification

Recognising that a lot of young people leaving tertiary education will be challenged for employment opportunities while COVID-19 is around, SAS – the leader in analytics – is now actively promoting the company’s online ‘Certified Young Professionals’ program in Australia and New Zealand.

Free to all Australian and New Zealand students in higher education who have a valid education domain email address – university, TAFE, other tertiary institution – the SAS® Certified Young Professionals program comprises a sequence of assisted self-learning modules which, when successfully completed, equips them for roles as data analysts.

The initiative is being led by Ian Edwards, head of Academic Outreach for SAS A/NZ, who points out that while the jobs market, generally, may be slow for some time to come, “The global shortage of skilled business analysts is real and now, and also very much applies in our part of the world”.

To-date, nearly 1,000 Australian and New Zealand students have embarked on the program, including some currently at the University of Auckland, RMIT, La Trobe University and UTS. Worldwide enrolment in the SAS Certified Young Professionals program currently exceeds 12,000.

The program’s modules are designed for students with no particular IT or other higher education prerequisites and starts with free access to SAS software. Once students have signed up for the course at Your Future Starts Here they can either download the SAS software or access it online.

Having done so, all they need is an internet connection to take them to the SAS Customised Learning Portal to study whenever they want, wherever they are. The Portal also gives them access to SAS analytics experts, so they can ask questions and seek advice.

Once students have completed the e-learning and attended a series of associated webinars they are eligible to sit the two-hour certification exam. This can be done either at a SAS office or the student’s approved teaching institution.

Students who pass the exam can elect to be listed in the international ‘SAS Global Certified Professional Directory’ which is commonly accessed by employers and recruitment agencies who recognise the value of SAS credentials when looking for new talent. In addition, SAS will introduce them to its customers seeking staff.
