Former Olympian says GB Rowing Team is about to face its 'sternest test' before Rio
With a number of the world’s top crews convening in Lucerne, Switzerland, for the 2016 World Rowing Cup II which kicks off on Friday, May 27, former Olympic gold-medal-winning rower Mark Hunter says the GB Rowing Team will face its “’sternest test’ and, for some, is the only chance to compete against their toughest rivals before Rio”.
The event is the last major rowing regatta before the squad for the Rio 2016 Olympics is announced and Mark, an ambassador of SAS, the Official Analytics Partner of British Rowing and the GB Rowing Team, continued: “Most athletes, crews and their coaches will want to ensure they produce a solid performance this weekend; and in doing so, establish themselves in the medal zone making themselves the ones to watch.”
The challenge in an Olympic year is for elite athletes to peak more than once in a season. Mark Hunter experienced this in 2008, winning gold at the World Rowing Cup II in Munich before repeating the feat in Beijing at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Discussing this, Mark, who will be part of the BBC commentary team in Rio, said: “I’ve always believed peaking at the right time has three components; being physically ready is important but, you must also be at your best mentally and technically to achieve a true ‘peak performance’.
“I felt I experienced two peaks per season. The first was a ‘mini-peak’ when I had two of these elements in place, and my aim would be to time this for an event such as the World Rowing Cup event.
“In an Olympic year, every athlete is aiming to peak at The Games and this is when I’d be looking for my second peak, when I was at my best physically, mentally and technically – giving me the confidence to deliver my absolute best possible performance.”
The World Rowing Cup II takes place from 27-29 May in Lucerne, Switzerland. For more information and results from the weekend’s action visit www.britishrowing.org.
