SAS makes October 2014 Big Data Analytics Month
Series of initiatives by SAS including events, research into What Makes a Great Data Scientist, and the launch of an online business analytics assessment tool showing the value of Big Data Analytics
SAS, the leader in business analytics software and services, has organised a global series of events, webinars, surveys and research launches as part of its Big Data Analytics Month in October 2014. The initiative will highlight the importance and value of Big Data to businesses, public sector and academic organisations, consumers, citizens and data science professionals.
"The volume and velocity of Big Data continues to increase and the Internet of Things will make Big Data even bigger. This will create tremendous resources for the world," said Mark Wilkinson, managing director, SAS UK & Ireland. "Big Data has become the new 'oil' which will drive the Information Economy, but, just like in the industrial revolution, that 'oil' needs refining to power the economy. Analytics is the tool to help refine Big Data to enable organisations to gain insights from their valuable information resources. The evolving Data Science discipline is key to deriving the true potential from the world's new Big Data assets."
Demonstrating the value of Big Data Analytics
As part of Big Data Analytics Month SAS UK & Ireland is launching an online business analytics assessment tool together with IDG. Business leaders can assess their organisation's analytics capabilities and benchmark themselves against industry peers by visiting: http://www.enterpriseittools.com/sas/. The assessment identifies areas of competence and those that need improvement across eight dimensions: return-on-investment, governance, productivity, timeliness, accuracy, effectiveness, empowerment and maturity. Businesses will be able to see how Big Data Analytics can help them across the enterprise, the skills needed to support those initiatives, and potential technology solutions.
Data Scientists – ready for greatness?
Big Data Analytics Month will also see SAS release the initial findings from a major study into the UK and Ireland's community of data scientists. Over 600 data scientists have already completed the confidential personality profiling survey at www.sas.com/uk/ds and received an individual profile report. The summary report launched on October 6 highlights the key attributes that determine 'What makes a great data scientist?', and is designed to help current and future practitioners and their management understand what is required to be the best in this fast evolving profession.
Big Data Skills Festival
The culmination of the Big Data Analytics Month in the UK will be SAS' Big Data Skills Festival on 30 October at Brunel University, London. This one-day event will see over 500 students from more than 15 universities brought together with some of the UK's top employers including Aviva, Barclays, HMRC, Office of National Statistics, PwC, and RWE nPower – all of whom are recruiting for data scientists. The events keynote speaker will be Stephen Kelly, Chief Operating Officer, UK Government.
October will also see SAS, with its almost 40 year track record in analytics, run Big Data Analytics events in cities around the globe including London, Frankfurt, Paris, Las Vegas, Lisbon, Warsaw, Madrid and Prague. Visit www.sas.com/bigdataanalytics for details.
