Firefly chooses SAS for clinical trial data

Clinical data conversion specialists use SAS to efficiently manipulate large data sets

Firefly Clinical Programming Ltd, specialists in clinical database conversion, has chosen technology provided by SAS UK & Ireland, the leader in business analytics to manipulate large clinical trial datasets for its customers.

The company works closely with data management, clinical research organisations and statistical groups for a wide variety of customers, such as pharmaceutical companies, that use clinical trial data to find insights that can drive advancements in medical science. It specialises in converting clinical databases to the standard Study Data Tabulation Model (SDTM) format, which is an international standard for clinical research data provided through the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC).

Matt Smith, Programming Director, Firefly Clinical Programming Ltd, said: "SAS was the only programming language we were aware of which would allow us to efficiently manipulate large datasets. Also our customers deliver data to us in SAS format and expect it to be returned to them in SAS. If you are delivering SDTM you require SAS, it is as simple as that."

Andy Cutler, Director of Strategy, SAS UK & Ireland, commented: "We're delighted Firefly is using SAS to deliver clinical trial data to its customers. Having this data in a standard format to facilitate analysis of all the available data can speed up research findings, leading to new cures for diseases and improved patient care."

SAS has been actively involved in increased data sharing between pharmaceutical companies and academia to advance research that could improve patient care for a variety of medical conditions, from diabetes to cancer. Its life sciences solutions enable researchers to analyse patient-level, anonymized clinical trial information from multiple sponsors in a secure, globally accessible environment.

The SAS solution deployed by Firefly is SAS® Analytics Pro, a comprehensive solution that allows users to access, manipulate and apply advanced statistical analysis to data, as well as present it via high-impact visuals.
