La Trobe University and SAS® extend relationship

  • SAS technology to be deployed in La Trobe Master of Business Analytics program
  • Launch of the SAS Analytics Innovation Lab at La Trobe University

In a bid to address a drastic skills shortage in the data science field in the very near future, La Trobe University has entered a new agreement with SAS Australia to establish a Master of Business Analytics, beginning 2016.

Continuing a relationship that began in 2007, the new agreement will make SAS business analytics technology available for La Trobe Business School’s Master of Business Analytics program. The technology will also be used within the University’s new SAS Analytics Innovation Lab.

SAS Australia and New Zealand chief operating officer, Lynette Clunies-Ross, said the enhanced SAS undertaking was in keeping with the company’s long record of support for initiatives to promote the teaching of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) for two important reasons.

“First, such teaching underpins our future productivity and international competitiveness. Australia can no longer rely on traditional industries to maintain its long envied position in world economic rankings. Analytical skills will be an increasingly important differentiator in every field, and we are obviously delighted to continue working with La Trobe to help guarantee that differentiator for this country.

“Second, the need is increasingly urgent. Estimates vary of the number of unfilled vacancies there will be for qualified analytics professionals in the years ahead. However, everyone agrees the global shortage is already in the hundreds of thousands, and growing. It takes time to become fully skilled in data analytics but once they are, La Trobe’s graduates will find ready and rewarding careers awaiting them.”

Professor Paul Mather, Head of La Trobe Business School, said the new La Trobe Master of Business Analytics was designed specifically to address this current and growing need for analytics professionals.

“Our new Master of Business Analytics addresses a considerable skills gap in the emerging ‘big data’ phenomenon and should help students to benefit from the cutting edge expertise within our Business School,” Professor Mather said.

“This is a unique collaborative program designed with input from academia, industry and practitioners. The course is highly practice-focussed both on the use of industry tools but also in the curriculum, where industry practitioners teach into at least 20 per cent of each subject.

“The new business analytics research team members at La Trobe individually have a strong track record in machine learning, data mining, text analytics as well as many years of industry experience. The team has recently set up the SAS Analytics Innovation Lab, where foundation research will be adapted and enhanced for big data analytics in real life and industry applications.”

The long relationship between La Trobe and SAS includes annual scholarships, a formal work placement program that helps graduates gain employment, and continued support for teaching and research objectives.
