Upcoming Changes to SAS® University Edition
SAS® OnDemand for Academics is now the primary software choice for learners. Access to SAS University Edition will end Aug. 2, 2021; users will no longer be able to download it after Apr. 30, 2021. Check out SAS OnDemand for Academics today for free access to SAS for individual learners as well as university educators and students.
Start by choosing your operating system below:
Before You Begin
To ensure a trouble-free installation, make sure your Windows computer meets the minimum system requirements:
- Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10
- 64-bit hardware,
minimum 1GB RAM
- One of these browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, 10 or 11
- Mozilla Firefox 21 or later
- Google Chrome 27 or later
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, 10 or 11
Four-Step Installation Overview
Set Up
Get virtualization software.
First, download and install virtualization software on your computer. We recommend Oracle VirtualBox for Windows, which is free.
Note: SAS University Edition also works with VMware Workstation Player, which you can download here: VMware Workstation Player download page. Charges may apply.
Create a folder for your SAS files.
While you wait for VirtualBox to install:
- Create a folder named SASUniversityEdition (no spaces) on your local computer in a location you will remember.
- Then create a subfolder within the SASUniversityEdition folder called myfolders (no spaces). This is where you'll save all your SAS University Edition files.
Download
Download the SAS University Edition vApp.
- Click the Get SAS University Edition button below. You'll be prompted to create a SAS Profile, or sign in if you already have one.
- After you're signed in to your SAS Profile, accept the license agreement terms and conditions.
- On the Order Summary Page, click the Download link, and the download will begin. (If your browser prompts you to save or run the file, select Save to save the file in your Downloads directory.)
Note: The file is more than 1.7GB. Depending on your internet connection, it might take a while to download. Grab a snack, call a friend, read a book – it will be done before you know it. And remember – you're getting the world's most powerful analytics software. It's worth the wait!
Configure
Import SAS University Edition into VirtualBox.
- Launch VirtualBox and select File > Import Appliance.
- In the Import Virtual Appliance window, click the folder icon to the right of the field.
- In the file browser window, select the SAS University Edition .ova file, and click Open.
- Click Next, and then click Import in the Appliance Settings window.
Share your myfolders folder with VirtualBox.
- In VirtualBox, select the SAS University Edition vApp, and then select Machine > Settings.
- In the navigation pane, select Shared Folders, and then click the Add Folder icon (+) in the upper right of the Settings window.
- In the Add Share window, select Other as the folder path.
- In the Select Folder window, open the SASUniversityEdition folder, and select the myfolders subfolder you created in step 1. Click Select Folder.
- In the Add Share window, confirm that Read-only is not selected.
- Select the Auto-mount and Make Permanent (if available) options, and click OK.
- Click OK again to close the Settings window.
Use
Start SAS University Edition.
- In VirtualBox, select the SAS University Edition vApp, and then select Machine > Start. It might take a few minutes for the virtual machine to start.
Note: When the virtual machine is running, the screen with the SAS logo is replaced with a black console screen (called the Welcome window). You can minimize this window, but do not close the Welcome window until you are ready to end your SAS session. - In a web browser on your local computer, enter http://localhost:10080.
- From the SAS University Edition: Information Center, click Start SAS Studio.

- Mozilla Firefox 21 or later

Four-Step Installation Overview
Set Up
First, download and install virtualization software on your Mac. We recommend Oracle VirtualBox for OS X, which is free.
Note: SAS University Edition also works with VMware Fusion, which you can download here: VMware Fusion for OS X download page. Charges may apply.
While you wait for VirtualBox to install:
- Create a folder named SASUniversityEdition (no spaces) on your local computer in a location you will remember.
- Then create a subfolder within the SASUniversityEdition folder called myfolders (no spaces). This is where you'll save all your SAS University Edition files.

Download the SAS University Edition vApp.

Import SAS University Edition into VirtualBox.
- Launch VirtualBox, then select File > Import Appliance.
- In the Appliance to Import pane, click the folder icon to the right of the field.
- In the file browser window, select the SAS University Edition .ova file.
- Click Open. Then click Continue.
- In the Appliance Settings window, click Import.
Share your myfolders folder with VirtualBox.
- In VirtualBox, select the SAS University Edition vApp, and then select Machine > Settings.
- Click Shared Folders, and then click the Add Folder (+) icon in the upper right of the Settings window.
- In the Add Share window, select Other as the folder path.
- In the file browser window, open the SASUniversityEdition folder, and select the myfolders subfolder you created in step 1. Click Choose.
- In the Add Share window, confirm that Read-only is not selected.
- Select the Auto-mount and Make Permanent (if present) options, and click OK.
- Click OK again to close the Settings window.
Use
Start SAS University Edition.
- In VirtualBox, select Machine > Start. It might take a few minutes for the virtual machine to start. When the start-up process completes, you will see the SAS University Edition Welcome screen.
Note: When the virtual machine is running, the screen with the SAS logo is replaced with a black console screen (called the Welcome window). You can minimize this window, but do not close the Welcome window until you are ready to end your SAS session. - In a web browser on your local computer, enter http://localhost:10080.
- From the SAS University Edition: Information Center, click Start SAS Studio.
