Team SAS goes the distance for Mental Health UK

A team of 14 cyclists from Marlow-based analytics leader SAS have recently returned weary but proud after a mammoth 300-mile cycle ride from London to Amsterdam in just four days. The inspiration was raising more than £28,000 for Mental Health UK.

The team set off on a sunny Thursday from Kent and arrived in Amsterdam last Sunday three days later after cycling through France and Belgium. The charity is one the company – which specialises in data analytics and artificial intelligence – is very supportive of, after being chosen by employees from a shortlist for what should be the nominated charity in 2019.

One of the participants was Scott Comber, Senior Director of Professional Services at SAS UK & Ireland, who said: “It was a fabulous experience and one I’ll never forget. When you’re doing something like this which is a bit out of your comfort zone alongside colleagues and for a great cause, it puts things in perspective. We’re all proud we took part and, most importantly, that we raised a significant sum for a great charity.

“I’d particularly like to thank one of our partners, Core Compete, who specialise in cloud analytics. They made an extremely generous donation without which we’d not have beaten our challenging funding target of £20,000. It really has been a combined effort in so many ways.”

SAS is also the official analytics partner for British Rowing, and Olympic Medallist Zoe Lee said: “Such a great effort by everyone involved, not just for the cycling challenge but for raising this amount of money for a great cause. Mental health support is so important in all environments and it’s crucial to recognise if you’re struggling and know you can seek help.”

James Fletcher, Head of Corporate Partnerships for Mental Health UK, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with the efforts of everyone involved in raising this money. Fortunately there is more recognition of how widespread mental health issues are, but that doesn’t change the fact that one in four people across the UK are affected by mental health problems every year. That’s why we’re so grateful for fundraising efforts like this so we can continue to provide advice and support to those who need it.”
