Celebrating 25 years of freestyle at the SAS Hurley Classic

Pro athletes and beginner enthusiasts converge at Europe’s biggest freestyle paddle event

SAS, the leader in business analytics software and services, is again sponsoring the SAS Hurley Classic, taking place on 22 and 23 November 2014 at Hurley Weir. The oldest paddle sport event of its kind, the SAS Hurley Classic is celebrating 25 years of bringing together the best competitive freestyle paddlers with local community enthusiasts.

Over 200 novice and junior canoeists will be joined by 10 of the world's top 15 athletes - including double European Champion Nuria Fontaine - at Europe's biggest freestyle event. The two-day competition will include freestyle demos, competitive races and paddle boarding challenges for all.

During the course of Saturday a number of freestyle demonstrations, showcases and coaching sessions will take place. These include the Old Skool display of boats and equipment dating back to the event's first run in 1989 and the SAS COLB (Come on Lets Boat), which encourages boaters of all skill levels to join in the fun.

Additionally, the 'Meet the Stars' Younguns Freestyle event will give 80 local youths the opportunity to paddle with the pros in a morning workshop. World class athletes, including 2011 World Champion James Bebbington and 2009 World Champion Nicholas Troutman, will spend the morning coaching keen paddlers on everything from freestyle flat water techniques to how to make kit last longer.

To demonstrate the skill and agility of the paddlers, the adrenaline-fuelled 'BoaterX' event will see canoeists launch a 12-metre high ramp before manoeuvring around eddies, white water and weir gates. To further test their nerve, participants can expect challenges from eight balls and a water pump that could blast them off course. Spectators will be treated to a series of freestyle stunts and spins from this year's formidable line-up, including 10 former Hurley Classic winners.

The event is proudly supported by SAS and local community representatives including Lord Leigh of Hurley. As well as watching the events, visitors can enjoy lectures and workshops from some of the world's leading freestyle athletes as well as demos and advice from coaches.

Keith Valder, Chief Operating Officer for SAS UK & Ireland, said: "Over the years we've seen the SAS Hurley Classic go from strength to strength. We're proud to be sponsoring the event and hosting participants and spectators at our grounds.
