Navigating Change in the New Analytics Era

The emergence of the analytics economy means organizations innovate and succeed with a blend of data, analytics, and collaboration.

The Big Data craze of a few years ago has made the collection, processing and leveraging of information a key initiative for all organizations. But it’s not just about data. It’s about open, accessible data augmented by powerful analytics that scale to deliver value.  This fusion of data, analytics and collaboration forms the foundation of the analytics economy, where each insight sparks the next. It's where people leverage data and work together with Artificial Intelligence to accelerate insight and innovation and make government better.

The impact of the analytics economy on government is widespread. Whether is automating processes with artificial intelligence, combating prescription abuse, improving service delivery or providing services to new citizens, all governments can benefit from these digital interactions.

Now is the time for government organizations to capitalize on the analytics economy. Today’s analytics are consumable, mature and pervasive, translating into increased adoption and understanding for all users, from data scientists to business users and executives.

A Practical Guide to Analytics in Government - How Analytics Can Make Government Work 

This session provides demonstrations of real-world analytics applications for legislators, policy-makers, and support staff at the federal, provincial and local levels. Big Data and analytics are transforming industries across the board, and governments can reap many of the same benefits by applying analytics to processes and programs already in place. From healthcare delivery and child well-being to crime and program fraud, analytics can—in fact, already does—transform the way government works. In this session, Marie Lowman will discuss how analytics can be implemented in your own context: What is the downstream impact of new legislation? How can we make programs more efficient? Is it possible to predict policy outcomes without analytics? How do I get started building analytics into my government organization?

Dynamic Risk Management to Strengthen Program Integrity and Investigation  

Identifying and proactively addressing risks within public sector organizations creates value for customers, employees, and society overall. Effective risk management allows organizations to seize opportunities related to the achievement of their objectives. Among the myriad risks are operational risks that benefit greatly from the harnessing of data and analytics to identify, prioritize and treat individual high-risk transactions. Applications include income tax non-compliance, benefit payment fraud and errors, passenger and cargo border screening and passport processing, to name but a few. The promise of analytics is to deliver increased efficiency and effectiveness. This is well-understood in the public sector. Advanced analytics has the potential to help us rethink the business of government. From remodeling traditional delivery models to optimizing performance to improving engagement between government organizations and with the public, the potential value of advanced analytics is undeniable. But this value does not come without a cost.   This panel will discuss barriers to leveraging analytics in government and highlight opportunities and strategies to overcome these challenges.

Analytics in Official Statistics: From Adaptive Survey Design to the U.S. 2020 Census

This presentation will cover the U.S. Census Bureau’s approach to implementing analytics in the production of official statistics. From a modest beginning in the Census Bureau’s Research and Methodology Directorate, the Center for Adaptive Design (CAD) was able to design new systems and innovative methodological approaches, influencing first the smaller Demographic surveys, and eventually helping to shape the final design for the 2020 Census.

From Pilot to Production: Operationalizing Your Analytics 

This session will provide strategies to get your analytics projects up and running to enhance the decision-making process.   Improved outcomes occur with the adoption of evidence-based decision-making.  To this end, many organizations focus on the analytics; embracing machine learning and artificial intelligence are more recent trends.  The analytic lifecycle has three distinct components that contribute to successful operationalization.  The co-dependence of each component will be explored so that organizations can avoid the cost and missed opportunity when focus is directed solely at analytic algorithms and the modelling process.

Artificial Intelligence for Executives: Integrating AI into Your Analytical Strategy

The buzz around AI today is a result of existing technology that’s come to an inflection point where lower cost computing power, data storage and crowd-sourced algorithms are making "intelligent" technologies accessible to everyone, not just the elites with the deepest pockets. AI, Deep Learning, cognitive computing and their foundational building blocks in Machine Learning have been in play for decades.
