University of Queensland enhances data science curriculum in job market hungry for advanced data analysis skills

SAS® Certification qualifications to earn student course credits

The University of Queensland and SAS – the leader in analytics – have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which will lead to a significant expansion of the relationship between the two parties.

Under the terms of the MoU, registered students of the University’s faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) will now be able to access the SAS Academy for Data Science.

Significantly, ITEE students will be able to earn credit towards their degree score on completion of either of the SAS Academy courses – ‘SAS Certified Big Data Professional’ or ‘SAS Certified Advanced Analytics Professional’.

Students earning these SAS qualifications can also choose to be listed in the global SAS Certified Professionals Directory which is commonly accessed by employers and recruitment agencies.

And while The University of Queensland is one of several Australian teaching institutions that have long included SAS modules in their curricular, this is the first time they have been offered as electives to earn course credits.

Announcing this initiative, the head of data science at ITEE, Professor Shazia Sadiq, said, “As the demand for qualified data scientists increases, UQ’s flagship postgraduate program in Data Science, which commenced in 2017, is attracting top students due to its technical and advanced focus.

“Through this newly established relationship with SAS, UQ students can gain credit equivalent to one university course (out of 16) towards their Master of Data Science. This collaboration with SAS represents an opportunity to add a new dimension to the student’s CV.”

Speaking for SAS, David Bowie, the company’s Vice President for Australia and New Zealand, said, “The dearth of qualified data scientists is worldwide and as more and more organisations look to their data for insights to decision making, the problem is growing.

“SAS analytics technology is already widely entrenched in both the private and public sectors in Australia, so graduates benefitting from this initiative will be well received by a hungry job market.”
