How long have you been using SAS®?

26 years.

What SAS products have you used in the past? What products and solutions are you currently using?

I was a SAS user for 26 years, while I was employed with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, the Texas State Auditor, and also with the US Department of Veterans Affairs. I used Base SAS®, SAS/STAT®, SAS/GRAPH®, SAS/AF®, SAS/OR®, SAS/ETS®, SAS/FSP®, SAS/IntrNet®, and SAS for the PC. However, since I have been retired for a few years, I am not currently using SAS.

What is a problem you have solved using SAS?

I used SAS to build econometric models for economic and revenue forecasting, for preparing ad hoc managerial reports, for selecting candidates for tax audits, for developing computer-assisted auditing techniques, for distributing reports and data to users, and for fraud detection.

What is the most innovative way you have used SAS?

I have combined my mathematical and statistical knowledge with components of the SAS system to be innovative in my support of state auditors – using SAS for audit selection, developing audit tools and for fraud detection.

What is your most memorable SAS moment?

I was the founder of the Austin-Area SAS Users Group, and also of the South Central SAS Users Group. I was a frequent contributor at a great many SAS conferences. I have happy memories of sharing SAS knowledge with other SAS users.

How has SAS changed in the time you have been using it?

When I started using SAS, you had to learn how to write programming code to get SAS to analyze the data and to generate reports. Now non-programmers can simply "point and click" their way to obtaining useful information.

Have you ever attended a SAS users group meeting or SAS Global Forum? If yes, please list them.

I attended the Austin-Area SAS Users Group meetings and almost all of the SUGI conferences from SUGI 13 through SAS Global Forum 2008. I also attended all of the SCSUG conferences from 1991 through 2007. Additionally, I went to the SAS Data Mining Technology Conferences in 2004 and 2006. I presented papers at many of those SAS conferences. Plus, I participated in several smaller SAS conferences in Wisconsin, New Mexico, Louisiana and Texas.

Has your work with SAS been influenced by any other members of the SAS community?

Yes, my work has benefited from my associations with Dave Riba, Frank DiIorio, Debbie Buck, Clarence Jackson, John Knox and many other of my SAS friends.

If you could point a new SAS user to one resource, what would it be?

SAS/IntrNet®.
