Course Review: "The Time Series Approach to Quality" with J. Stuart Hunter

We recently spoke with J. Stuart Hunter, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus at Princeton University's School of Engineering and Applied Science, about his contribution to SAS' Analytical Lecture Series. Dr. Hunter will present a lecture titled "The Time Series Approach to Quality" on July 25.

SAS Training Report: Why did you decide to present on this topic for SAS' Analytical Lecture Series?

J. Stuart Hunter: Most engineers employing quality control charts seem unaware of the remarkable utility of modern software to manipulate time series data. Much of a quality engineer's process data are time series but this fact is often put aside for the convenience of using a Shewhart, Cusum or EWMA chart. Information locked within the structure of the time series is thus irretrievably and unnecessarily lost. Today, time series modeling is easy and applications to forecasting and control now parallel that of the process control engineer. The difference lies in enabling a process operator to act as a controller in those situations where automatic control is not an option.

EDU: What most excites you about this topic?

JSH: What excites me about this topic is its simplicity of application once the heavy burden of computation has been lifted.

EDU: Who would most benefit from attending this presentation?

JSH: All quality engineers knowledgeable about the application of Shewhart or CuSum or EWMA charts would gain from attending this course.

EDU: How will your presentation benefit these attendees?

JSH: They would learn how easy it is to employ manual control once an adequate process forecast model is in hand. They would become acquainted with the language and terminology associated with Box-Jenkins ARIMA modeling and hopefully never again ignore the information contained in a time series.

Quick Tip: Reading SAS Data in .Net Using ADO and ADO.NET

This sample demonstrates how you can use C# and VB.NET with both ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) and ADO.NET to retrieve data from a SAS Integrated Object Model (IOM) Server using the SAS IOM Object Linking and Embedding Database (OLE DB) Data Provider. Each source file included in this sample can be compiled into an executable program. Each program takes one command line argument: a data set name in the form <libname>.<memname>. The programs then try to connect to a local instance of a SAS IOM Server and read the given data set with the SAS IOM OLE DB Data Provider.
