The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and SAS® prepare the innovative thinkers of tomorrow

High-quality education within a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes both pure and applied statistics lies at the core of the Department of Mathematics at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Add to that a commitment to nurturing students’ ability to make sound decisions, and the department plays a vital role in the university’s overall mission of encouraging knowledge-enrichment activities “that engage the mind and thinking,” according UTM Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Zaini bin Ujang.

The department’s mission also ties into current unique market conditions in the global economy that demand highly skilled “thinkers” to solve the most challenging problems many organizations have ever faced. The market requires thinkers that base decisions, solutions and strategies on robust analyses of data. UTM responds to this need by offering graduates extensive training in SAS, ranging in topics from data quality to operational research, to solve today’s challenges.

As such, the university has a record of easily placing students into the work force immediately following graduation. “SAS is the perfect match between employers’ expectations and statistical skills achieved by graduates,” says Dr. Muhammad Hisyam Lee, IT Manager of Research Management Center and Associate Professor within the Faculty of Science.

Both undergraduate and graduate students benefit from courses based on SAS. For example, UTM offers classes on multivariate statistical analysis, quality control, time series analysis and operational research. It offers design of experiment courses taught with JMP®, a business division of SAS that develops and markets statistical discovery software to visualize analytics for end users.

“With the help of SAS, students learn ways to enhance data analysis, model building, and optimization in an enterprise environment,” says Lee, adding that SAS is also an excellent tool for research activities at the university.

Overall, UTM uses the SAS academic suite of solutions to inspire students to think creatively and innovatively to make informed decisions. As a result, the work force is better prepared to face current global obstacles that necessitate such critical judgment.
