Getting Started

This topic presents the most efficient pathway through the Migration focus area.

The table of contents along the left-hand side of the Migration focus area is organized in a stepwise fashion. That is, you are expected to complete planning before you begin execution.

Planning

Good planning cannot be emphasized enough. Start by printing the Migration Planning Worksheet to use as a checklist. The Planning Worksheet includes all known best practices and issues that SAS employees and customers have uncovered. Many of the planning topics ask you to inventory your assets and requirements so that you can create the best plan.

Need quick answers about your existing SAS files? Then go straight to the Compatibility Calculator. If you need to migrate files, the Compatibility Calculator guides you to the PROC MIGRATE Calculator for your MIGRATE instructions. These calculators can answer most of your questions, right at your desktop. However, if your migration will impact the work of others, you are strongly advised to complete the Planning Worksheet.

Execution

Use the execution stage in real time, aligning its steps against the schedule or calendar that you created during the planning stage.

With drill-down instructions or links to instructions elsewhere, the execution stage guides you through many typical migration tasks. This information was developed from the real-life SAS®9 migration experiences of internal SAS teams in R&D and customer support.

Resources

Other information resources include the SAS Install Center, PROC MIGRATE reference, SAS Notes, case studies, and papers. For example, we have collected specialized information for the pharmaceutical industry, which is linked from the Industry-Specific Answers topic.
