Barry Jonas
Assistant US Attorney, Department of Justice, Counterterrorism Section and Lead Prosecutor for Holy Land Foundation trial

Barry Jonas is an 18-year veteran prosecutor currently based in the Department of Justice’s Counterterrorism Section of the National Security Division. He specializes in terrorism financing cases.

Before joining the Counterterrorism Section, he worked 11 years prosecuting white collar cases. Jonas successfully prosecuted both the Infocom Corporation and the Holy Land Foundation.

Jonas grew up in New York City (Queens) and attended Albany State University and St. John’s Law School in New York.

Charles Bowman is responsible for leading and overseeing Bank of America’s global compliance and operational risk activities. Bowman also serves as the State of North Carolina and Charlotte Market President, responsible for integrating and delivering the company’s resources to communities and customers. Bowman has been influential in driving a culture of compliance throughout the company and delivering a world-class compliance strategy that has been recognized as industry-leading.

Previously, Bowman was responsible for the company’s private equity investments, La Salle Global Trust Services and Supply Chain Management’s sourcing and strategy functions. Bowman joined Bank of America in 1996 as Associate General Counsel in the legal department. In 1999, he was named Principal Compliance Executive. Prior to joining Bank of America, Bowman was partner in a law firm where his practice focused on corporate and financing transactions. He also previously served as the Associate Director of the John Motley Morehead Foundation in Chapel Hill, NC.

Bowman earned his bachelor’s degree in American studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and both a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina Law School and a master’s degree in public policy analysis from Duke University.


John Clare Brocklebank, PhD

John Brocklebank started working with SAS in 1981. He is currently responsible for product R&D, marketing, sales, program management, IT, quality assurance and documentation for SAS® Solutions OnDemand, Advanced Analytics Lab, SAS Drug Development and  Education Value Added Assessment System (EVAAS®) ASP educational testing (K-12).

Prior to joining SAS, Brocklebank was an Adjunct Professor of Statistics and Genetics at North Carolina State University, a Statistical Instructor in the Department of Biostatistics at State University of New York and a Research Associate at Vanderbilt University.

Brocklebank received a PhD in statistics from North Carolina State University, an MS in biostatistics from Vanderbilt University and a BA in mathematics from Lipscomb University.


Jim Candelmo
Deputy Criminal Chief
US Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of North Carolina

James Candelmo was appointed Anti-Terrorism Coordinator for the Eastern District of North Carolina in 2001. He is responsible for implementing the Attorney General’s anti-terrorism efforts among 50 federal, state and local law enforcement operations including the FBI, Immigration Customs Enforcement, Secret Service and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation throughout the 44 easternmost counties of the state. 

Candelmo has been a prosecutor for more than 20 years and has been with the Department of Justice for more than 15 years. In his present role as a Deputy Criminal Chief, Candelmo supervises all cases dealing with terrorism, national security and export enforcement. He also serves as the office's National Security Coordinator and Critical Incident Response Coordinator.

Candelmo attended the University of Dayton Law School and served on active duty with the United States Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps after graduating. He received his Master of Law in international law focused in national security from Georgetown University. Additionally, he is an adjunct professor of law in the field of national security and federal criminal law. Among his honors are the 2007 Department of Justice Award for Terrorism Prevention and National Security and the CIA Seal Award.


David Chenkin

David B. Chenkin is a Partner in the New York office of law firm Zeichner Ellman & Krause LLP (ZEK) and a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist. He is a member of ZEK's management committee and is the firm's administrative partner. As a litigator, Chenkin represents major financial institutions and other clients in civil, criminal, regulatory and compliance-related matters. He heads the firm's anti-money laundering and Bank Secrecy Act compliance practice areas, and represents clients in connection with investigations initiated by Congress and by federal, state and local prosecutors and regulators. In addition, Chenkin handles confidential internal investigations for clients facing potential civil, criminal and regulatory exposure. He frequently speaks on these issues at conferences that are attended by regulators, members of the financial services industry and law enforcement.

Chenkin received his BA in accounting from Queens College and his JD from Duke University School of Law.


Scott M. Custer

Scott Custer is responsible for guiding RBC Bank’s overall strategy and operations, and managing for growth and stronger returns. Additionally, he leads the RBC Bank board of directors in setting the bank's business strategy as it grows its presence in the southeast. Prior to this role, Custer served as President of the bank and was responsible for retail and commercial banking. He has been with RBC Bank and its predecessor, Peoples Bancorporation, for more than 17 years.

Custer began his banking career more than 25 years ago when he completed Wachovia's corporate banking training program. He then served as a commercial banker in Raleigh before joining First Union as a Commercial Banking and Real Estate Manager.

Custer holds a BA in economics from the College of William and Mary. He is active in the local community and sits on the board of directors of the North Carolina Chamber, the YMCA of the Triangle Area and the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation Board. In addition, he is Chair of the board of directors for Communities in Schools of North Carolina and a member of the North Carolina Education Ball.


William J. Fox
Global AML and Economic Sanctions Executive

William J. Fox is responsible for Bank of America’s anti-money laundering and economic sanctions global programs.

Prior to joining Bank of America, Fox served as the Director of the US Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) – the US government’s Financial Intelligence Unit.  He led the administration of the Bank Secrecy Act, which authorizes the collection, analysis and dissemination of financial information important to the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing. Fox also led the development and implementation of strategies to improve FinCEN’s technology platform; increased access to financial intelligence to law enforcement; and developed meaningful financial intelligence analysis for law enforcement and policymakers.

Fox received a bachelor’s degree in history and a law degree from Creighton University. In March 2005, U.S. Banker magazine named him one of the 25 most influential people in high finance.


Jim Goodnight

Rhett Hardy

Rhett Hardy provides Bank of America's Senior Vice President of Domestic Investigations with intelligence analysis, monthly trend reporting and analytical support for complex ring investigations. His team has provided intelligence that led to the capture of a serial bank robber and used link analytics to uncover numerous fraud rings.

Prior to joining Bank of America, Hardy served as a Non-Commissioned Officer with Special Operations Team Alpha (SOT-A) 302, US Army 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), where he was an Arabic Linguist and Communications Sergeant. He provided tactical intelligence collection supporting two special forces operational detachments that resulted in numerous national-level intelligence reports.

Hardy also has varied experience in the financial services industry, working as an analyst with the First Union Capital Markets Group and a Registered Representative with the Vanguard Group.

Hardy is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a BS in business administration and a graduate of the Defense Language Institute, Presidio, with an honors diploma in Arabic.


George E. B. Holding

George E. B. Holding took the helm as US Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina on Sept. 13, 2006. From March 2002 to September 2006, he served as First Assistant US Attorney. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, he was Counsel at Maupin Taylor, PA; Legislative Counsel to Senator Jesse Helms; Associate Attorney at Kilpatrick Stockton LLP; and Law Clerk to US District Judge Terrence W. Boyle.

Holding received his Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University School of Law. He graduated from Wake Forest University with a bachelor's degree in classical studies and attended Groton School.


Adam Kaufmann
Assistant District Attorney and the Chief of Investigations Division Central (IDC)
County of New York

Adam Kaufmann is the Assistant District Attorney in the Office of Robert M. Morgenthau, District Attorney for the County of New York. As the Chief of the IDC, he investigates and prosecutes banking and securities frauds, many of them having international ramifications. Kaufmann supervises the investigation and prosecution of complex white-collar criminal cases, focusing on cases involving securities fraud, international money laundering, tax evasion, shell companies, illegal money remitters, offshore accounts, illicit uses of correspondent banking relationships and the underground financial systems that permit criminals to operate.

Through IDC's efforts, dating back to the BCCI investigation, more than $1 billion has been returned to investors, and hundreds of defendants have been convicted and sentenced for white collar crime.


Jay N. Lerner
Assistant Chief for the Fraud Section, Criminal Division
US Department of Justice

Jay Lerner provides policy and strategic direction for federal fraud prosecutions in a variety of areas, including financial institution fraud, payments fraud, mortgage fraud and other financial fraud criminal violations. He provides counsel with respect to enforcement initiatives, intelligence matters, legislative issues, training and external outreach to international and other government partners. Lerner is also the co-chair of the Payment Fraud Working Group, an interagency group that examines issues related to the misuse of payments systems and better ways to protect the systems.

Lerner also served as a federal prosecutor at the Department of Justice for more than 11 years. During that time, he worked on money laundering prosecutions, drug intelligence and international affairs. He additionally served as the Associate General Counsel at the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), where he led investigations of department programs and activities, aiming to learn lessons from past experiences and formulate improvements.

Lerner has taught as a visiting (adjunct) lecturer at The George Washington University in the areas of criminal law and policing. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He also has a degree in accountancy from the University of Illinois and passed the certified public accountants examination.


Dennis M. Lormel
Managing Director, Northeast Region
IPSA International

Dennis Lormel retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in December 2003, following more than 30 years of government service, almost 28 years as a Special Agent in the FBI. During his distinguished career, Lormel amassed extensive case experience as a street agent, supervisor and senior executive, particularly in complex, document- and labor-intensive financial-related investigative matters.

Following 9/11, Lormel formulated, established and directed the FBI’s comprehensive terrorist financing initiative. These efforts evolved into the Terrorist Financing Operations Section of the FBI. This multi-agency, multi-disciplined entity has attained international recognition as one of the world’s elite operations for tracking, investigating and disrupting terrorist-related financial activity. For his visionary contributions, Lormel has received numerous commendations and awards, including the Department of Justice, Criminal Division’s Award for Investigative Initiative and the CIA’s George H. W. Bush Award for Excellence in Counterterrorism.

Lormel currently serves as Managing Director, Northeast Region, IPSA International. He provides consulting services and training related to terrorist financing, money laundering, fraud and financial crimes. He is also an Advisor to the Congressional Anti-Terrorist Financing Task Force and serves as a contributing expert to The Counterterrorism Blog.


John P. O’Neill Jr.

Vice President, Product Strategy Manager
Bank of America Fraud Detection Strategies

John P. O’Neill Jr. is responsible for managing, conducting and implementing complex fraud ring investigations related to the groups or organizations that target Bank of America for their own financial gain. He has worked with several law enforcement agencies throughout North America with cases related to: identity theft of home equity lines of credit, the use of computers to commit fraud, and identifying merchants whose data may have been compromised.

O’Neill has been in the financial services industry since 1991. He has been responsible for conducting detailed penetration tests against Bank of America systems to ensure that they were not vulnerable to external attacks. He was also part of the company’s first cross-product fraud detection unit.

O’Neill graduated from Towson State University where he majored in political science and economics.


Karim Rajwani, BA (HONS), CA FCA (ICAEW)

Karim Rajwani is currently RBC's Global Head of Anti-Money Laundering and is responsible for leading RBC's anti-money laundering, anti-terrorism and KYC initiatives globally. RBC has developed and implemented various solutions, including transaction monitoring, client risk scoring and automated name scanning systems to comply with new regulatory requirements and deter, detect and report suspicious and terrorist financing activities globally. Prior to this position, Rajwani played the lead role in developing RBC's operational risk management and capital methodologies. He also was involved in several international committees on the subject of operational risk, including the Bank for International Settlements Working Groups and Institute of International Finance.

In addition to his 20 years of risk management experience, Rajwani has worked for various financial institutions, chartered accounting and management consulting firms.  In these roles he has overseen the implementation of a number of enterprisewide risk management and compliance initiatives in various institutions.

Rajwani graduated with double honors in accounting and finance and is a qualified Chartered Accountant in the UK and Canada.


Denise Truman
Vice President, Senior Investigator
Bank of America Global Anti-Money Laundering and Economic Sanctions

Denise Truman is responsible for conducting complex money laundering investigations related to the financing of terrorist groups and operations. She has led highly sensitive and critical investigations related to the tri-border area, Mexican drug cartels and religious charities.

Prior to her current role, she partnered to develop Wachovia Corporation’s online fraud strategy and investigative practices. She has also held various roles related to external fraud and anti-money laundering investigations and has served as a subject matter expert on issues related to: suspicious activity reporting; regulatory compliance of the Bank Secrecy Act; USA PATRIOT Act, Title III; and detection and prevention of online banking fraud.

Prior to entering the banking industry, Truman served as a Sentencing Specialist with the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts and was the Assistant Administrator for a 100-bed, minimum-custody correctional facility in Charlotte.

Truman graduated from Gardner-Webb University where she majored in social sciences.


Daniel Wager
Supervisory Special Agent
Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Daniel Wager currently serves as the Director of the New York High Intensity Financial Crime Area (HIFCA). The New York HIFCA is a multi-agency financial intelligence unit that was identified in the 2006 FATF United States Mutual Evaluation Report on anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism as “a model for the rest of the country.” As director of the HIFCA, Wager supervises analysts, investigators and support personnel from seven law enforcement agencies in the proactive review of suspicious activity reports, money laundering investigative case support and financial institution outreach.

Wager also currently oversees financial intelligence development and case support activities on behalf of the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (SIGTARP) and the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF) task force.

Wager is the recipient of commendations from the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency for his work in national security investigations. He is a veteran of US Army special operations and military intelligence, with combat service in Panama and Iraq. Wager is also a magna cum laude graduate of Marist College with a BA in communications/journalism.


John S. Zdanowicz, PhD
Florida International Bankers Association (FIBA) Professor of Finance, Florida International University, and President, International Trade Alert Inc.

John Zdanowicz, PhD, is the Florida International Bankers Association (FIBA) Professor of Finance at Florida International University, where he was also the Director of the Center for Banking and Financial Institutions and the Chairman of the Department of Finance. Zdanowicz has consulted for US Customs and the US Department of Justice on transfer pricing and money laundering issues, and the US Congress Office of Technology Assessment on wire transfers analysis. He was also an instructor at the Financial Fraud Institute of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, US Department of the Treasury.

Zdanowicz is an internationally recognized expert on money laundering and terrorist financing through international trade flows. He’s presented research on money laundering, terrorist financing, income tax evasion and capital flight at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission; Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crime, US Department of Treasury; Federal Bureau of Investigation; National Drug Intelligence Center; International Trade and Finance Association; Federal Reserve Bank; World Bank; and the Brookings Institution.

Zdanowicz earned his PhD in finance from Michigan State University.
