Consumers spend more at Christmas than any other time of year, making it a crucial trading period for retailers to maximise sales and profits.

Verdict, in conjunction with SAS, has produced its latest forecasts for retail expenditure at the start of the season, using analysts' expertise, industry knowledge and data collected over the past 28 years.

Alongside these forecasts, we have used the results of a survey conducted last Christmas, "How Britain Shops at Christmas 2011", to provide insight into consumer spending trends and behaviours.

Discounting is expected to play a heavy part in retailers’ strategies so the ability to forecast and monitor demand, in order to at least maintain margins and increase consumer penetration, is crucial.
