According to a global survey of 334 financial services executives, only a third think the principles of risk management in financial services remain sound and are confident that policy-makers can formulate an effective response to the current economic crisis. The results of the survey in March 2009 by the Economist Intelligence Unit on behalf of SAS focused on enterprise risk management strategies.

Karel Lanoo
Chief Executive Officer

Karel Lannoo has been chief executive of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) since 2000 and senior research fellow since 1997. CEPS is one of the leading independent European think tanks, with a strong reputation in economic and foreign policy research. Full bio
Before joining CEPS, Lannoo was employed in the cultural sector, working for the Italian conglomerate Ferruzzi and for a professional federation. He was also active as a freelance journalist for specialised publications.
Lannoo's areas of expertise include the European Monetary Union, banking and financial markets, financial market regulation, corporate governance; retail finance & consumer credit, and EU business policies.
He has published books and articles in specialised magazines and journals on EU, financial regulation and corporate governance. Lannoo has also spoken at several European Parliament and European Commission hearings and participated in studies for national and international bodies (EU institutions, OECD, ADB, World Bank).
Lannoo holds a Baccalaureate in philosophy and a Masters Degree in European Studies from the University of Leuven, Belgium and obtained a Graduate Degree in Modern History and International Relations from the University of Nancy, France. Short bio
Gerard Lyons, PhD

Gerard Lyons is an expert on the world economy, international financial system, macroeconomic policy and global markets in his role as Chief Economist and Group Head of Global Research at Standard Chartered. Lyons has 20 years of experience in senior roles with some of the world's leading financial institutions and as a highly regarded city and international economist with an excellent forecasting record. Previous positions include Chief Economist at DKB International and consultant to the Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, Chief UK Economist at Swiss Bank Corporation, beginning his career with Chase Manhattan. He holds a PhD from the University of London, where he researched testing the efficiency of financial futures markets.
Currently, Lyons is a committee member of the Hong Kong Association, a council member of the University of Warwick, a member of the International Committee of the Bretton Woods Committee, a council member of the No Campaign, a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and heavily involved with Asia House and the Japan Society. Joseph Quinlan

With nearly 20 years of financial services experience, Quinlan previously served as a Senior Global Economist/Strategist for Morgan Stanley. Quinlan lectures on finance and global economics at New York University, where he has been a faculty member since 1992, and he regularly lectures at various universities around the world.
In 2007, he was a recipient of the European-American Business Council Leadership award for his research on the transatlantic partnership and global economy. In 2006, the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union awarded him with the 2006 Transatlantic Business Award for his research on US-Europe economic ties. Short bio
Allan Russell

Allan Russell, Senior Vice President of Strategy at SAS, was selected in 2007 by CEO Jim Goodnight to be a SAS Fellow, researching and reporting on emerging trends in the software industry. A company veteran for more than a quarter century, Russell contributes to the long-term growth of SAS by working with technology innovators among our customers and in the industry. Full bio
Russell's research currently focuses on the uses of business analytics and business intelligence in a "process-centric" world and examines areas such as business process management, business activity monitoring, SAS workflow tools and integration between SAS and process platforms.
Russell also is head of SAS' Global Risk Practice, which provides risk management solutions to customers in banking, insurance and other industries, and which focus on diverse needs ranging from operation risk management to credit risk to Solvency II compliance and more.
He is one of the principal authors of "Information Revolution: Using the Information Evolution Model to Grow your Business," published in 2006. The book describes how organizations mature in their uses of information and presents a model that enables organizations to evaluate their use of information objectively, providing a framework to manage and use data as a corporate asset and compete in today's global arena.
Russell joined SAS in 1980 to help build SAS' nascent European operation, where he played a critical role in establishing SAS' presence in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and Asia Pacific.

Alastair Sim
Senior Director, Global Marketing, EMEA Region

Alastair Sim is SAS' Senior Director of Global Marketing for the Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) region. He was promoted to this role after nearly ten years as Director of Strategy and Marketing for SAS UK & Ireland. Sim also leads the SAS Global Marketing Programme for Risk Management, and is a key member of the Global Marketing Board. Full bio

The customer-driven marketing strategy implemented under Sim's direction resulted in SAS UK & Ireland being the largest contributor to SAS worldwide revenues outside of its head office in the United States. In recent years, it also achieved the highest revenue growth amongst the major SAS offices in Europe.
Sim's approach to business focuses on providing the best possible strategic value to customers, which has resulted in a corporate direction that has moved SAS from being a tools provider to a provider of applications that help organisations innovate and accelerate their own success.
Sim's customer-driven approach is a result of his considerable experience at SAS, where he has worked closely with customers in a wide-variety of marketing, sales, and professional services roles.
Prior to joining SAS, Sim worked within the pharmaceutical industry as a senior consultant. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Institute of Directors and holds a BSc Honours degree in Applied Statistics from Sheffield Hallam University. Short bio
