SAS/ACCESS® software modules and SAS® Data Surveyor modules are out-of-the-box solutions that provide data connectivity and integration between SAS and third-party data sources, including data warehouse appliances, enterprise applications, mainframes (nonrelational data sources), PC files and relational databases. These highly optimized data access engines enable SAS solutions to read, write and update data regardless of the data source or platform. Because the data appears native to SAS, there is no need to learn Structured Query Language (SQL) or any other database-specific query languages.

  • Access data directly, easily and securely with native interfaces. No SQL expertise or custom coding of extractions is required. You get a high degree of control over data security because SAS/ACCESS honors and augments the native security of the target data source. SAS enables a transparent approach by making data sources appear as though they are a native SAS data type, which facilitates interaction with SAS procedures, the SAS DATA step and SAS solutions. In addition, users are also able to interact directly with the data source using native data source capabilities.
  • Gain fast performance and reduce network traffic. SAS/ACCESS interfaces provide high-performance read, write and load capabilities. The ability to pass database queries, joins and many functions to a target data source for processing reduces network traffic and speeds data access.

  • Data virtualization and data federation enable you to create seamless, federated views across heterogeneous data sources, including relational databases, legacy systems and file-based data.
  • Federated queries and views are surfaced as database objects that can be used with all SAS solutions and client applications.
  • DBMS metadata can be accurately maintained within the SAS Metadata Repository.
  • Broad coverage of data sources and platforms enable you to integrate data from across your organization.
  • Includes support for native APIs and client connectivity to all major RDBMS software, with the option to access data without detailed knowledge of the database or SQL. The appropriate SQL queries are generated from the interface and passed to the data source for execution.
  • Enhances your query capabilities with the ability to write native SQL (also referred to as explicit SQL) or use SAS SQL extinctions (implicit SQL).
  • Security mechanisms inherent in the databases are used.
  • For data sources without a dedicated access engine, SAS/ACCESS for ODBC can be used for ODBC-based data sources and SAS/ACCESS Interface for OLE DB can be used for databases that support OLE DB.
Flexible query language support
  • A transparent access option surfaces data with minimal knowledge of the data or the SQL needed for access.
  • An explicit SQL interface enables users to write RDBMS-specific SQL commands ranging from simple selects to complex stored procedure execution. You can stream results back to SAS in-line with other processing.
  • Mapping of SAS-specific statements or functions to database-specific statements or functions enables all appropriate SQL statements to be processed directly inside the database, providing the best possible performance with the widest degree of flexibility.
Performance capabilities
  • Multithreaded read interface uses threaded kernel technology and native APIs.
  • Data read and writes are highly optimized with buffering, compressions, threading, etc.
  • Automatic query chunking and dynamic, threaded read capabilities enable high-performance unloads and extractions without the need for third-party tools and utilities.
  • Provides SQL push-down  capabilities for SQL and many SAS procedures.
  • Has the ability to directly control join-processing capabilities.
  • Includes temporary table support:
    • Create a temporary table that can be accessed by multiple SAS processes. This provides performance gains when the same data is required for different steps in a session.
    • Use temporary tables for heterogeneous joins.
  • Includes transparent support for bulk-load options. There is no need to understand different bulk loaders. Just set the SAS bulk-load option to "yes" and SAS uses the most appropriate capabilities.
Metadata integration
  • Database metadata can be accurately maintained within the SAS Metadata Repository.
  • Data jobs are registered via the SAS Metadata Server so they can be used in a variety of SAS solutions. Register data once; then use it in many places.
Optimization
  • Support for native data types, storage and partitioning options, including temporary tables and support for materialized views.
  • Native database data is translated to the appropriate SAS data type for optimized processing.
  • National language support.
