Sainsbury's uses Marketmax to offer secure exchange of collaborative planograms

Unilever signs up to Sainsbury's Supplier Collaboration Programme

09 February 2006 -  Sainsbury's has become one of the first big European supermarket groups to offer suppliers a secure system for the two-way exchange of planograms, the plans that ultimately determine how products are presented to supermarket customers. This will enable suppliers to develop planograms remotely. Sainsbury's is using Marketmax, a world class planning solution from SAS, to provide the software for the service, which is part of its Supplier Collaboration Programme. Unilever, the first of a number of suppliers expected to sign up to the programme, is already taking advantage of the closer collaboration.

In an industry where data integrity and security are paramount, the Sainsbury's programme provides a collaborative and flexible approach to the production of better quality plans that will drive a better return on space and increased sales for both Sainsbury's and its suppliers. In a move that will be closely watched by other retailers, suppliers and industry analysts, the Marketmax application will enable suppliers for the first time to securely view the entire range for their category remotely. In addition to faster and improved planning, the approach will help reduce the timescales for introducing new products and rolling out new planograms, as well as enabling the ongoing exchange of new ideas and innovations.

"At Unilever we've led the way in developing category expertise to increase sales at fixture. Anything that allows us to respond more quickly to the changing requirements of shoppers is therefore a fantastic business resource" said Simon van Moppes, Business Unit Director for Sainsbury's at Unilever UK. "Through the Supplier Collaboration programme we plan to harmonize systems and processes, which we anticipate will result in less duplication of work and faster planogramming. This will result in our being able to work with Sainsbury's more effectively to bring category and shopper insights to shelf in a faster time frame. Overall, this is a great example of where working in partnership with customers on transformational business projects can add significant value," he added.

Mike Coupe, Trading Director at Sainsbury's, commented, "Sainsbury's is committed to a collaborative approach to working with our suppliers in all areas of our business. This is just one example of closer working relationships and will help us to manage ranges in our stores."
