UK Police Forces choose SAS to improve data integration and quality for CRISP

SAS CRISP solution enables police to share cross-regional data

12 December 2005 -  Gloucestershire Constabulary, the first police force in the UK to select SAS to solve its data integration and data quality issues in the run-up to the March 2006 deadline for the Cross Regional Information Sharing Project (CRISP), has now been joined by three other police forces, including the Northamptonshire Police, which have also selected the SAS solution. The SAS CRISP solution will provide the police with fast and effective integration and quality assurance of their source systems, which is currently stored in numerous databases and will enable the individual police forces to standardise the data, so that their data can be shared with other police forces.

Following the Bichard Inquiry into the Soham murders, cross-regional sharing of information has become a priority for the police service. However, most individual police forces' data is stored in multiple databases. This means that a lot of time is wasted by the police forces in trying to find out things that they already know collectively, but are unable to retrieve data directly from other police force systems.

The SAS CRISP solution enables police forces with the means to solve their data integration and quality assurance problems in a very short timeframe, whilst at the same time considerably lowering the cost of maintaining existing systems. Gloucestershire Constabulary are well on schedule to hit the CRISP deadline to start sharing data locally, regionally and nationally through the secure Criminal Justice Extranet.

"SAS has been working with commercial organisations for many years to extract information from legacy systems and to quality assure their data, so we are delighted to be working with the police on similar issues," said John Dalton, managing director of SAS UK. "Our large commercial customers have completed similar projects in very short timescales, whilst making considerable savings - even halving the costs of running their legacy systems." He added, "We look forward to seeing the same efficiencies being experienced with the SAS CRISP solution."
