Technology tackles gun crime across Europe27 November 2008 - A platform which will identify and track organised criminals and the weapons they use, across the continent, is being developed by European Law enforcement agencies. The system, called Odyssey, allows anti-crime units across Europe to instantly share and cross-reference crime and terrorism evidence. Odyssey allows security operatives to instantly flag up ballistics data that fits with similar crimes around Europe meaning, for example, that a single gun used in multiple crimes can be tracked around Europe. The platform will enhance mutual co-operation, security and sustainability across the EU and is supported by EUROPOL, the police and other security agencies. The Odyssey platform will be co-ordinated by Sheffield Hallam University and developed by a consortium of Police Forces, Governmental organisations, IT companies and Research Centres. Professor Babak Akhgar, co-ordinator of the Odyssey project at Sheffield Hallam University said: "Security agencies have been using ballistics data for many years, but until now cross-referencing that data has been a long process. This system automatically alerts relevant agents in other countries when there is a match on gun and bullet signatures. "Criminals use guns as currency, and Odyssey allows agencies to build profiles of crime networks by tracking the unique 'signature' that guns and bullets produce when they are fired." The project will develop new European Union standards in policing and combating organised crime and terrorism. Co-ordinated by Sheffield Hallam University, Odyssey partners include Atos Origin, Forensic Pathways Ltd, EUROPOL, XLAB, SESA, Politecnico di Milano, National Ballistics Intelligence Service, Royal Military Academy, An Garda Siochana, SAS, D.A.C. - Servizio Polizia Scientifica, and other European security agencies.
