SAS Enterprise Data Integration software to support Scotland’s next census

10 June 2009 -  The quality of Scotland’s 2011 Census results is set to be supported by software which will check the completed questionnaires - of around 5 million people - for any duplicates, inconsistencies or gaps.

Scotland’s census organizer, the General Register Office for Scotland, chose SAS Enterprise Data Integration (EDI) software, to help its statisticians to prepare and analyze the data. Census data provides a snapshot of the nation and how its people live. The anonymised results help central and local government, health boards and businesses to plan and provide a wide range of services, for example health, housing, transport and education.

Scotland’s next census is its first to offer people the choice of completing their questionnaire on paper or online. The responses will be combined before the EDI software is run to highlight any issues with the data.

Ian Manocha, Managing Director of SAS UK states: “Checking the details of every household in Scotland is a big challenge, so rapid, robust and reliable software has a key role to play in census quality assurance. We’re proud that our software has been chosen to support the statistical processing of Scotland’s next census.”

The General Register Office for Scotland is currently using SAS EDI software to check the results of its census rehearsal, which ran in two parts of Scotland (west Edinburgh and Lewis and Harris) earlier this year.

About the
 General Register Office for Scotland

Scotland’s census is an official count of its people and households. It is held every 10 years and the next is set to take place on 27 March 2011.  The General Register Office for Scotland has been responsible for organizing Scotland’s Census for 150 years, since 1861.

The confidentiality of the information provided about individuals and households is protected for 100 years after each census. Until then, the General Register Office for Scotland only publishes anonymised statistics which build a picture of the needs and characteristics of Scotland as a whole and the groups and communities within it.
