NHS in further clamp down on fraudsters

24 January 2007 -  The NHS Counter Fraud Service (NHS CFS) announced an exclusive deal today with SAS UK for its new generation of enterprise intelligence software. The software will be used to support its continuing efforts to tackle fraud.

Using advanced predictive data analysis techniques, SAS' Intelligence Platform can indicate where NHS fraud is most likely to occur. The NHS CFS can then prevent the fraud from taking place and strengthen policy or systems weaknesses. Potentially, this could save the NHS millions of pounds.

The software can also identify trends or anomalies in payment systems. In detecting these anomalies, it allows NHS counter fraud specialists to investigate whether some claims are false and fraud has taken place. All areas of potential NHS fraud will be covered by the software, including patient and employee fraud.

SAS' Intelligence Platform allows the NHS CFS access to NHS payment data and the ability to integrate data from other internal and external sources. The analytics tools detect previously hidden trends within the data and the reporting tools enable this information to be quickly disseminated to counter fraud specialists for investigation.

Dermit McCausland, Managing Director of the NHS CFS said:

"This software will give the NHS an up to the minute, 'cutting edge' capacity to detect and stop fraud. Our initiative is in line with the recommendations in the Government's Fraud Review Report for a professional, holistic approach to the problem of fraud.

While counter fraud work has already benefited the NHS by hundreds of millions of pounds in recent years and losses have been reduced by up to 55%, we are not complacent and we know that there is more to be done. This software will help us protect the NHS so that it can properly protect the health of the public."

John Dalton, Managing Director of SAS UK added:

"I am very proud that SAS has been pivotal in helping the NHS CFS lead the way in combating fraud. The NHS is the world's second largest organisation, which shows the scalability of our solutions and that recommendations of the government's fraud review can be met with solutions available today. We're confident that the model we have created with the NHS CFS could be used as best practice for further roll-out in other governmental departments. As the leading national and international player in combating healthcare fraud and corruption, the NHS CFS continues to set the standard for how it should be done."

The purchase follows the recent publication of the fraud review, which outlines the government’s proposed strategy to counter fraud. By using SAS, the NHS CFS is taking a leading role in meeting the recommendations set out by the review.
