SAS smashes ETL world record while establishing new, real-world benchmarks

18 April 2007 -  SAS, the leader in business intelligence, today announced a new world record for the extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) of massive volumes of data into a data warehouse while establishing new benchmarks that more accurately reflect real-world data integration tasks.

Recent tests of SAS® Data Integrationsoftware optimised for Sun Microsystems’ SPARC® processor-based servers running the Solaris™ 10 Operating System (OS) demonstrated that this powerful combination can outperform any other vendor’s tools by more than 60 percent in throughput testing, based on previously published results in the industry.

SAS has gone beyond this traditional, basic ETL benchmarking – which reflects a limited scope of the real-world demands on data integration solutions – and established new marks for speed, scalability and performance.

"Performance is one of the top concerns of people evaluating data integration technology, yet there is a surprising lack of information available," said Mark Madsen, President of Third Nature, a consulting and market research firm focused on business intelligence, data integration and information management. "Most ETL benchmarks oversimplify the problems faced by users in order to show impressive numbers. With this benchmark, SAS is demonstrating performance that is relevant to real customer situations."

SAS loaded 1.25 terabytes of transaction data – representing approximately three years of sales data for a typical, large international retailer – into an application-ready star schema data model. During execution, type II, slowly changing dimension tables were created, and data was cleansed, transformed and processed as it would be in a typical customer data mart. The complete runtime for this job including all processes was two hours and 36 minutes, establishing a new benchmark for a task of this complexity and volume.

Moreover, SAS is engineering a comprehensive, wide-ranging battery of tests to extend the benchmarking effort for data integration solutions by better encompassing a wider scope of implementations in enterprises today. When these tests are completed, the results will be made public for industry review.

"Our customers are facing increasingly complex data environments that require a flexible solution that must manage several demanding data integration tasks in order to deliver the intelligence today’s enterprises require," said Ken Hausman, Data Integration Product Marketing Manager for SAS. "These new, more rigorous benchmarking studies reflect SAS’ and Sun’s commitment to solving the real-world data integration issues faced by our customers."

"Sun and SAS share a common vision for technology, as we are both committed to developing and delivering the most complete, integrated, end-to-end IT solutions available," said Juan Carlos Soto, Vice President, Market Development for Sun Microsystems. "ETL plays a critical role in enabling the intelligent enterprise, and these latest benchmarks reflect how our customers are using the Solaris 10 OS’s advanced performance and scalability features combined with Sun’s high performance systems and storage products to gain a competitive advantage."

In conventional ETL benchmarking, SAS used a Sun Fire™ E25K domainable server running 72 processors, the Solaris 10 OS, and 20 Sun StorageTek 6140 arrays using the Sun StorageTek QFS shared file system. Accelerated by SAS Grid Manager, SAS demonstrated the performance of SAS Enterprise Data Integration Server when used for ETL through the completion of a test involving the throughput of 1.7 terabytes (trillion bytes) in 17 minutes, representing 5.97 TB per hour – a world record based on published benchmarks in the industry.
