Institute for Defense and Business and SAS to honor Executive FellowsProgram fosters defense, private sector synergies27 September 2006 - The Executive Fellows Program of the Institute for Defense and Business (IDB) today will recognize its 2006 class of Fellows. For the second year, SAS, the leader in business intelligence, is sponsoring the Fellows Program, which creates opportunities for recently retired uniformed and civilian military leaders to share insights on emerging military and business trends. The second annual IDB Executive Fellows dinner will be held at the US Chamber of Commerce building in Washington. The hosts will be former North Carolina Gov. Jim Martin, Sen. Richard Burr and Thomas J. Donohue Sr., President and CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce. “The IDB is a remarkable example of how defense and private sector organizations can successfully identify best practices that drive real results for business transformation,” said Tom Mazich, Vice President of SAS US Government Operations. The 2006 Executive Fellows are retired Gen. Leon E. Salomon, US Army; retired Lt. Gen. Richard L. Kelly, US Marine Corps; retired Maj. Gen. Mary L. Saunders, US Air Force; and William R. Lucas, who retired from the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, Senior Executive Service. IDB selected the Fellows based on their outstanding service records and their demonstrated interest in continuing to share their experience and expertise with future generations of military leaders. IDB Executive Fellows are chosen from the military branches, the Department of Defense and the joint commands. The IDB grants at least four fellowships annually. "IDB Executive Fellows are all innovative leaders who have successfully applied best business practices to foster transformation to the benefit of their respective services and the DoD," said William T. Powell Jr., President of the IDB. "The Fellows Program was established to provide these outstanding leaders with a platform and the resources to carry on that important work in the context of the programs and activities of the IDB. We are fortunate to have their collective wisdom as a resource in our efforts." IDB Executive Fellows are active at Center of Excellence in Logistics and Technology (LOGTECH) programs and in other IDB educational offerings. They speak at conferences, provide insight on emerging issues and trends, and author an article or monograph on topics of interest to them, often in partnership with university faculty. The IDB is a nonprofit research and education foundation formed in 1998 by the University of North Carolina and the state of North Carolina. In addition to the Executive Fellows Program, the IDB manages LOGTECH, which was developed in partnership with the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill. The IDB also manages the US Army’s Depot and Arsenal Executive Leadership Program.
