One of Britain's largest universities, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) has more than 22,000 students and staff. In the past few years SHU has partnered with SAS to develop and offer its MSc in Business Intelligence. Previously available as a one-year full-time or two-year part-time course, requiring attendance at 10 residential sessions of one week's duration each, the MSc is now available in a three-year distance-learning format. "Potential students who want to remain in post during their studies can now do so," says Dr K.F. Jones, Course Leader. "Moreover, organisations that wish to sponsor employees on the course can do so without arranging substantial periods of leave for residential teaching." Typically, students will study the distance learning materials over two years and then complete the MSc by producing a dissertation in their final year. "There's a clear market demand for SAS professionals with proven skills in delivering business intelligence from raw, often warehoused data," adds Dr Jones. "The MSc provides a unique route for the acquisition of this expertise." Armed with such skills, SAS professionals can significantly enhance their organisation's use of SAS solutions. First, they can extend SAS usage into business areas previously unsupported by SAS. More importantly, they can develop and introduce all-new capabilities in the extraction of valuable intelligence to improve decision-making across the organisation.
