SAS/AF: An Update

We have received a number of queries on the future of SAS/AF in forthcoming releases of SAS. In order to answer your questions we have included a short FAQ section below:

Q. What is SAS/AF?

A. SAS/AF is the SAS object oriented (OO) development environment. SAS/AF is a key component of the SAS application developer tool kit, AppDev Studio™. It is used by SAS programmers to embed SAS query, modelling and business intelligence features into desktop applications.

Q. Will SAS/AF be included in SAS 9.1?

A. Yes - SAS/AF is part of SAS 9.1. The SCL language continues to be enhanced inline with the rest of SAS. It continues to be a core part of AppDev Studio.

Q. Should I consider moving all my SAS/AF applications to Microsoft Visual Basic?

A. You don't need to do this. However, if you want to use other languages for the development of a user interface you can because SAS has been developed to support a variety of presentation models. These include SAS frame technology, WebAF, Visual Basic and Java.

Q. Should I consider broadening my programming knowledge to include Visual Basic or Java?

A. With wider interface support it makes sense to be familiar with other programming languages. Broader programming skills will help you use SAS more widely in your organisation, and allow you achieve greater benefits and efficiencies with your applications.
