Hospital chooses SAS® to transform research
NHS Foundation Trust to build single view of patient and deliver more personalized care
CARY, NC (28 maj 2013) – Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust has chosen SAS, the leader in business analytics, to transform how it manages and delivers research through big data visualization. Information will be used from all its clinical and non-clinical systems to build a single view of the patient from which it can then apply SAS analytic techniques.
The ground-breaking deal – the first time SAS has worked with a UK hospital trust – should ultimately drive better clinical outcomes and build an enterprise information layer that transforms how the hospitals deliver patient-centered care.
Joanna Smith, CIO, Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We have access to a wealth of information which we must capitalize on so we can deliver services better suited to the individual needs of each patient. Evidence-based decisions that draw on all the available data are essential to achieving this. This project reflects our strategy of partnership and collaboration with other organisations, via a technical platform, so we can easily share information with partners, community care organisations and patients."
Cliff Morgan, Clinical Lead for IT, Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, added: "Incorporating analytics into our research trials can deliver new insights in key areas, such as the factors that lie behind the onset of heart and lung disease, which can then inform critical decisions about how we treat our patients."
Royal Brompton & Harefield will initially use SAS Visual Analytics to give quick insight into research problems that can then be more fully explored on the SAS platform. The trust will then look to move some of its operational reporting into Visual Analytics and, in the longer-term, the solution will be seen as the mechanism by which clinicians and management collaborate and share insight across the business of the hospital.
"Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust recognizes that one of the smartest things it can do to improve the outcome of research - and ultimately patient care - is to put all available data to work in a way that delivers care tailored to each patient," said Dr. Graham Hughes, SAS Chief Medical Officer. "SAS Visual Analytics will help the Trust's researchers more easily see patterns in disease trend data, for example. And detecting those patterns ultimately helps reduce risk; improve the quality, outcome and efficiency of care; and engage patients to better manage their own health."
SAS Visual Analytics is an in-memory solution for exploring any amount of data very quickly. Users can spot patterns, identify opportunities for further analysis and convey visual results via Web reports or iPad® and Android tablets. SAS Visual Analytics quickly reads data into memory for fast processing and data visualization. Users can then explore all data, execute analytic correlations on billions of rows of data in just minutes or seconds, and visually present results. They can then quickly identify patterns, trends and relationships in data that are not apparent before being graphically displayed.
Since the best way to understand the value of SAS Visual Analytics is by experiencing it first hand, SAS created an online environment for customers to try the software. Please visit the new interactive SAS Visual Analytics demo.
