SAS online curriculum expert to address global education policy forum

SAS® Curriculum Pathways® director discusses technology's role in developing 21st century skills

CARY, NC  (04. Nov. 2010)  – The international Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) brings together education experts, business leaders and policymakers from around the world to discuss the future of global education. SAS is a longtime advocate for technology in education and is represented at the OECD Education Policy Forum in Paris by Bruce Friend, Director of SAS Curriculum Pathways.

"Strong education is the key to sustainable economic recovery and improved opportunities for all," said Friend. "This event offers a rare global perspective on what is often considered a national or local problem, but the successes at those narrower levels often inform the bigger picture."

SAS, the leader in business analytics software and services, champions many programs that strive to integrate technology into education to engage students, empower teachers and teach 21st century skills, such as advanced data analysis. In addition to allowing professors to integrate SAS software into instruction at no cost, SAS supports efforts such as 1:1 laptop learning, algebra readiness, SAS programming for high schools and a master's degree in advanced analytics.

Also at no cost to educators, SAS Curriculum Pathways offers rich, interactive online resources in the core disciplines of science, math, social studies, English and Spanish. The standards-based content for grades 6-12 – used by thousands of educators in all 50 states – contains more than 1,200 academic resources, including lessons, engaging activities and interactive teaching tools, plus links to more than 4,000 academically appropriate websites.

Through these programs and others, SAS has reached more than 47,000 teachers and 150,000 students.

Friend will participate in a discussion, "New Needs, New Skills," about the skills required for strong, sustainable and equitable growth in the 21st century. Today's education and training systems need to prepare learners for more rapid change than ever before for jobs not yet created, using technologies not yet invented, to solve problems still unforeseen.

The OECD Education Policy Forum, part of the 2010 OECD Education Ministerial meeting, will share results with ministers of education around the world. The high-level, invitation-only policy forum is open to journalists. To maximize public access to the debates, the event will feature live Web streaming beginning at 9:00 a.m. CET on Nov. 4 and will be archived.
