Mr. Ir. Dirk Van Gijseghem, Afdelingshoofd Monitoring en Studie (Head of Monitoring and Study Department), accepted the award.

SAS Analytic Intelligence Award:

European Commission – Eurostat (Unit B1: IT systems for statistical production)

Eurostat processes and publishes statistical information, based on the data collected by the authorities in Member States. A large majority of these statistics is received as estimates (macro-data), with few micro-data collections, mostly in social statistics. For almost each of these, ad-hoc applications were independent-ly developed using SAS.

Recently Eurostat started the CVD (Cycle de Vie des Données = Data Life Cycle) initiative to rationalize existing systems and create a new IT architecture, based on the assumption that basically all data have the same life cycle.
CVD calls for the development of standard and reusable tools. As the quantity of micro-data coming to Eurostat is growing, it was decided to develop a new generic tool for the treatment of all micro-data. This tool is based on the SAS Business Intelligence Platform and called 'GSAST'.

The initial phase of the project is finished and GSAST is handling the first two micro-data collections in the field of education statistics.

Mr. Antonio Consoli, SAS Project Manager, and Mr. Pál T. Jancsók, SAS Project Officer, Eurostat, unit B1 accepted the award.

During the Forum the attendees could rate every presentation. The presentation with the highest score was the one from Eurocontrol, presented by Dr. David Marsh, Manager, Statistics and Forecasts who explained how Eurocontrol uses SAS to forecast growth in air traffic, while maintaining a high level of safety, reducing costs, and respecting the environment.

Eurocontrol is the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation.
