SAS links students to careers through innovative Work Placement ProgramSYDNEY, Australia (08 Sep 2009) – SAS Australia, the leader in business analytics, has partnered with Australian universities since 2003 to provide an enriching work-experience program exposing SAS-trained students to the workforce. The program runs for up to 12 weeks at the beginning of every year and was developed to assist students in gaining work-integrated learning opportunities and creating links to full-time employment. Participating universities include the University of New South Wales, Macquarie University, Swinburne University of Technology, La Trobe University and Queensland University of Technology. James Enoch, SAS Academic Program Manager said there was a strong demand across industries for SAS skills. “This program enables us to pair current and graduating students with host employers who they ordinarily would not have access to in order to help meet that demand,” he said. More than 11 companies were involved in the most recent program, including IAG, National Australia Bank, and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. “The success of the program speaks for itself,” said Mr Enoch. “Over the past two years, nearly 50 per cent of the students involved have stayed with their host companies and become permanent employees. “This is a great result: even better considering many of the participating students had not completed their studies and were not yet actively seeking permanent employment.” Speaking for one of this year’s host companies, the Commonwealth Bank’s Hilda Meo said she was highly impressed with the program. “This is an excellent program as the students are able to acquire and expand their skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving and taking responsibility,” she said. “This is also a good opportunity for students to enhance their employability.” The program is promoted through SAS speaking to students in courses where SAS is used and through university careers offices. “We evaluate student’s resumes and academic transcripts before speaking to applicants to determine their suitability and appropriate company match,” said Mr Enoch. “From there, we link the host employer with the student and they undertake a personal interview to determine their fit with the employer.”
