Leading Australian Educational Institute adds Sustainability Management to the curriculum with SAS

  • Hands-on teaching with SAS® for Sustainability Management suite to equip students with workplace skills now increasingly in demand
  • Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE can extend use of the SAS solution for ongoing business and social responsibility initiatives

SYDNEY, Australia  (03 Aug 2009)  –  The Australian arm of SAS – the leader in business analytics – has announced that the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) will deploy the SAS® for Sustainability Management software solution.  NMIT is a major learning institution and one of Australia’s largest and most successful providers of tertiary and vocational education.

The SAS solution enables organisations to measure their baseline performance on emissions, energy, water and waste to determine the fiscally responsible path to improvement.  While other vendors provide historical reports for hindsight, SAS’ integrated analytics-led platform delivers insight about the cost implications of current or proposed projects.(1)

At NMIT, various faculties will use the SAS solution in academic courses where sustainability is an aspect of the curriculum.  Later, if the Institute’s management so chooses, the solution can also be applied to its own sustainability initiatives and relevant corporate and social responsibility matters and reporting.

NMIT’s acting Head of Program – Business Degrees, John Grech explained, “The use of the SAS solution enables our graduates to be more work-ready by providing real world sustainability reporting and auditing skills in a move that is supported by both industry and professional bodies.  Our focus is on using the best solutions for the ongoing sustainability information capability”.

Acknowledging NMIT’s decision favouring the SAS approach to sustainability management, Peter Hong, General Manager, Public Sector, SAS Australia & New Zealand, said, “This illustrates once again the value the education sector sees in the quality of our solutions and support”.

He added, “SAS is particularly strong in education, both globally and locally, and in Australia, alone, we have six solution specialists and customer support engineers dedicated full-time to the sector”.

Achieving high performance

Only SAS combines data integration, reporting and analytics – enabling clients to navigate current environmental, social and economic challenges and also capitalise on future opportunities.

Among the new SAS customers boosting the bottom line through sustainability management:

  • Poste Italiane Group has decreased consumption 1 percent per year and reduced carbon dioxide emissions 7 percent. It uses SAS to analyze energy efficiency in 250 facilities, some with high energy consumption (data processing centers, executive centers and large branches). Plans include correcting operation and maintenance behaviors.
  • The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill uses JMP® statistical discovery software from SAS to assess the university’s carbon footprint. Focusing on building energy efficiency, the greenhouse gas emissions manager can recommend improvements that save money, electricity and emissions – with the goal to become climate neutral.
  • Duke University is implementing SAS for Sustainability Management to contribute to classroom learning and campus emissions reduction initiatives. Through its employee/student engagement program, “Bleed BLUE, Live GREEN”, Duke seeks to eliminate or offset all campus greenhouse gas emissions and lead the transition to a sustainable economy.

(1) SAS for Sustainability Management, based on the SAS Business Analytics Framework, uses the Global Reporting Initiative framework to report on triple bottom line indicators. These address three spheres of sustainability – environmental, social and economic – using SAS software's predictive abilities to validate strategies, identify causal relationships, forecast improvement scenarios and drive innovation.
