SAS ups the ante with no cost teaching access to leading analytics software

SYDNEY & AUCKLAND  (29 Nov 2010)  – SAS, the leader in business analytics software and services and the largest independent vendor in the business intelligence market, has further strengthened its offerings to the tertiary sector. Core SAS data management and analytical software, will be available to lecturers and their registered students complimentary as part of the SAS OnDemand for Academics software offering (www.sas.com/academics).

SAS OnDemand for Academics provides an online delivery model for teaching and learning data management and analytics.  Instructors at tertiary institutions can register for the service, set up a course and then invite their students to register for their course.  After registration is complete, users can access their chosen SAS software via an internet connection to a hosted server at SAS.  Through SAS OnDemand for Academics users have access to multiple SAS applications such as SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS Enterprise Miner (including SAS Text Miner nodes), and SAS Forecast Server. Additional offerings are expected.

At present, more than 2,000 universities and graduate schools around the globe use SAS for teaching and research, including more than 50 tertiary institutions in Australia and New Zealand. SAS has been heavily involved in academia since its establishment some 34 years ago and the SAS Global Academic Program has representatives in 56 countries around the world, including Australia and New Zealand, providing direct support to academics to assist in the development of industry standard SAS skills in their students.

The SAS Academic Program offers:

  • Complimentary SAS training materials and textbooks for lecturers
  • No cost home use of the software for staff and students
  • Work Placement Program linking SAS skilled students to internships
  • Postgraduate Research Software Scholarships
  • Train the trainer programs
  • A host of other initiatives to support teaching and research use

Speaking about the SAS Academic Program, Dr. Suzanne Zyngier, the current Executive Director, Master of Business Information Management and Systems at Melbourne’s La Trobe University, stresses the real world scenario offered by SAS saying, “It is all about management and the projects the students work on add value in a business context.  Working with real data, they learn about customer segmentation, for example, and when the students’ analyses are delivered to the owners of the data – generally the marketing operations of major financial institutions and other large organisations – we are providing solutions and findings that can be used for real business gain.”

James Enoch, Academic Program Manager in Australia and New Zealand adds, “As universities are answering the call to prepare their students for a more competitive world, we’re proud they’ve recognised that SAS skills give their students an advantage.  Business analytic skills in SAS can be the entrée to careers in almost any field and universities do their students a great service by helping them develop these skills”.
