Bridging the Gap between Academia and Business

28 years on from its origins in a university research project (Department of Agriculture at the University of North Carolina), SAS software continues to be used extensively in academic research.

An important recent development has been the release of an easy-to-use front end to the software, called SAS Enterprise Guide. This allows the researcher to access the full power of SAS in a point-and-click environment. For an interactive tour click here.

SAS and the Federal Drugs Administration
The FDA is defining standards for various types of electronic submissions to the agency. A transport format developed by SAS has been adopted as an FDA standard for accepting and archiving data sets

SAS® Scientific Discovery Solutions

  • SAS® Research Data Management - Formerly know as G23 from iBiomatics, this solution enables users to access, manage and view data within a centralized metadata repository. It manages all types of data formats, including genetic, proteomic, chemical, bioassay, toxicology, array and chemical structure data. In addition, SAS Research Data Management integrates easily with legacy systems within pharmaceutical and biotech R&D organisations and can include supplemental information, such as instrumentation IQ/OQ records and project management information.

The following Scientific Discovery Solution User's Guide is available in Final Format at http://support.sas.com/documentation/onlinedoc/sassds/

  • SAS® Microarray Solution - Built for genomic research, SAS Microarray Solution includes analytical best practices and prebuilt transformation processes specific to microarray data. When coupled with SAS Research Data Management, it supports powerful and innovative data analyses and simplifies data access and preparation, which are often essential but time-consuming tasks. SAS Microarray Solution facilitates the exploration and evolution of microarray data analysis for understanding gene expression and, ultimately, disease mechanisms.

  • SAS/Genetics™ - A dedicated tool for enabling statisticians to use analyzed genetic marker data. The first scientific discovery-focused product from SAS, SAS/Genetics delivers specialized information for marker analyses, increasing the productivity of discovery research and profitability of researchers.

  • SAS® Proteomics - SAS Proteomics helps organisations make safety and efficacy assessment processes more streamlined and consistent by:
    • Providing statistically focused analytic methods, such as PLS, PCA and discriminate analysis for identification of biomarkers associated with biological effects such as disease or adverse events.
    • Centralizing biomarker analyses for processing proteomic data and identifying biomarkers. Enabling the incorporation of a variety of supporting data, such as clinical and genetic information, to achieve optimal accuracy and reproducibility during biomarker analysis
Learning Edition

Fellowship Program

FREE SAS® Licence for Final Year Thesis Use
If you are preparing to write your Final Thesis you may licence any SAS software that you require, free of charge. You will be required to provide details of your university, faculty, research supervisor and your proposed research topic. Further information and application can be found here.

Student Ambassadors

Five students will earn the opportunity to present their research projects at SAS Forum International. The student ambassadors will meet with business leaders and specialists from every industry and sector, as well as SAS experts to discuss real business challenges and solutions. During the past four years, the student presentations have proven to be extremely popular with SAS customers. Moreover, because SAS skills are in demand and past participants presented complex research topics in a very professional way, many student ambassadors even received job offers as a result of attending.

If you:

  • Are in the process of writing a final thesis or PhD in which SAS plays a major role
  • Think your business relevant research project should be shared with an international audience
  • Feel confident in presenting to an international business audience in English
  • Would like to use SAS Forum International to meet potential employers

In the “additional comments” field (under step 4 of the online application) please provide us with:

Cover letter: Please explain why you should be selected as 1 of 5 student Ambassadors.

  • Essay: The following questions should be answered in your essay:
  • When will you finish your degree?
  • How did you first encounter SAS?
  • Which SAS technologies are you currently using in your research?
  • Why do you use SAS, rather than another type of software?
  • What do you know about SAS Forum International?
  • Why is SAS Forum International of interest to you?

All students under the Fellowship Program are eligible to become a Student Ambassador

Applications and requests for additional information should be sent to academic@oz.sas.com

Scholarships

A postgraduate research scholarship is available in the Department of Computing at Macquarie University, Sydney. The title of the project is Data Mining and Constraint Satisfaction in aid of Decision Support Systems. This project will investigate ways to incorporate data mining and knowledge discovery techniques in decision support systems. http://www.kdnuggets.com/news/2006/n13/11i.html

Data Set Library

We recognise that lecturers often have trouble obtaining data sets that are suitable for teaching specific concepts in statistics. To assist in that area, SAS has assembled a library of SAS data sets. After providing a minimal amount of identification information, visitors will be able to download any of a number of data sets from the Data Set Library. The library contains an index data set to help you ascertain the size of each data set and some types of analysis that might be appropriate for that data. In addition, a text file is included with each individual data set to give some background about the data and recommendations for analysis discussions.
