Temasek Polytechnic and SAS Partner to Create More Analytics Talent in Singapore
Temasek Polytechnic students today are applying analytics to solve everyday problems
Singapore (Nov. 03, 2011) – SINGAPORE (November 3, 2011) – Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and SAS, the leader in business analytics, today signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) to officiate a mutual commitment to develop the skills, resources and competencies in Business Intelligence (BI) and Business Analytics (BA). This collaboration aims to equip students with the latest analytics technology and its application to real-world scenarios by aligning with key industries’ needs.

The partnership between SAS and TP will contribute significantly to the education of students joining TP's newest course – the Diploma in Business Intelligence & Analytics. This course is aimed at meeting the growing demand from the industry for analytics capabilities. It also provides students and faculty members with training, scholarships, SAS's BI and BA solutions and internship opportunities, complementing SAS's certification program aimed at countering the shortage of skilled advanced analysts in Singapore.
"This strategic partnership between SAS and TP reinforces our commitment to work with Singapore's institutions of higher learning to develop a sustainable business analytics ecosystem," said Bill Lee, Country Manager of SAS Singapore. "Today, organisations are facing a skill-set gap with analytics talent. Our partnership with TP will deepen competencies in business analytics and inject the industry with a continuous pool of talent."
Students enrolled in the business analytics diploma program will learn how to best use analytics to predict business outcomes. Students at TP are already using analytics to help people make smarter decisions to solve a variety of unique everyday challenges. Responding to the recent hike in the COE prices for cars, TP students developed a solution to allow buyers to analyse car prices, and banks to analyse which loans to provide to finance the purchase of a selected car. Other projects include finding out the latest trends based on location based social networks, and finding out the ideal schools and courses for O Level graduates. <Please refer to Annex A for details of the projects.>
Business Analytics has been selected as one of the key focus areas by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) which will strengthen the development of information and communication technology skills that are critical to Singapore's economic growth.
Under the partnership, Temasek Polytechnic will open a TP-SAS Business Intelligence & Analytics Centre to provide students and faculty with hands-on experience with SAS solutions and access to SAS experts. It is the first such facility in a polytechnic. The new analytics facility builds on a track record of success with the SAS Advanced Analytics Lab at Singapore Management University.
"TP is pleased to collaborate with SAS to equip our students with industry-relevant skills and experience in business intelligence & analytics. Our students are already actively showcasing how smarter decisions can be made using business analytics solutions. The new TP-SAS Business Intelligence & Analytics Centre will complement these efforts and allow industry to engage our students to work on solutions using SAS technologies. The launch of the centre is timely as it will support the curriculum for TP's new Diploma in Business Intelligence & Analytics which will take in its first batch of students in 2012," said Mr Boo Kheng Hua, Principal & CEO, Temasek Polytechnic.
